Adam's Gas Price Roundup

Posted by Adam54 on Monday, March 7, 2011

I figured this was worthy of it's own thread, which I assume will be hijacked in due course. Post your local gas price, and if nothing else this'll be fun to look back at in a few months and say "Wow, $3.50. Those were the days."

I saw a range between $3.54 and $3.69 today. I'm assuming by the end of the week that will be a range of $3.69 to $3.85ish. Summer scares me.

How much is it near you?

3.73 today, but I just hit a quarter tank left. My guess it will be around 3.89 by Thursday locally.

Dang Kah, you are above the national average.  Must be because they have to pump the gas so far.  I think I paid $3.87 this past weekend.  I rarely look at the price, so I may be off.  I figure, why depress myself, I need the gas no matter what the price.  All I know is that it was nearly $50 to fill my tank, which is only 12 or 13 gallons.  I'm too lazy to do the math.

Getting close to 60 for a tank.  Running around 80 bucks a week just to take my kid to school and back.

Nearly 4 bucks a gallon, and Goits is still givin' gas away for free!

3.72 this morning, but my low gas warning light just came on. I guarantee it will jump 10-15 cents today. Mainly because I didn't have time to stop and fill up this morning.

Omi, I'm going to post this here (because you aren't on my facebook) so you can get a little perspective.  My car averages 28mpg, so it's not even like I'm driving a gas hog (like some people I know).  5 weeks since my last oil change, 2,000 miles, $278 in gas.  And that is just driving my kid to school and back and myself to work and back.  I can't even afford to make trips outside my loop.

This is why Dalty dropped a cool five hundred mil on his electric-steam-nuclear hybrid.

Sure, it cost him five times more than Jackson's Neverland Ranch is worth, but he won't have to refill until 34432 A.D.  Assuming it remains stable, and doesn't wipe out England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and half of continental Europe.

Omi, I'm also going to post this here (because you also aren't on my facebook). If you would stop driving (and subsequently needing to fill up your tank), you could save us all a lot of money. Don't you have a bicycle or something?

I don't know if I edited an old post or just got around to posting something that had been hanging around and waiting to be posted.  Whatever the case, though, it has appeared before Quasar's post.

I was thinking about this thread this morning and started thinking about the least I remember paying for gas.  When I first got my license at 16, I remember paying $0.69/gallon (why isn't there a cents symbol on a qwerty keyboard?).  I am positive that I only remember this number because of the number.  This was back in the late 80s when there was a huge decrease in gas prices for the summer.  I don't remember what caused it, but they didn't stay there for long.

When I started driving, it was around 90 cents a gallon.  I remember being able to scrape up change from the back seat and the couch cushions at home and get enough gas to cruise around for a couple days, even in my shitty gas-hog beast.  Less than $13 to fill the tank.

I didn't get a car until I graduated from college. Up to that point I'd always bummed rides off of friends/family, so to me gas was basically free. It was bliss.

I don't think the U.S. average has been under a dollar since the eighties, but it seems like there were brief dips in some areas in the late nineties.  I've been looking, and I haven't seen many reputable charts that go back all that far.  Most of them stop at the beginning of the millennium.  If I weren't at work, I'd dig deeper.

I've been a licensed driver since September of 1995, and I don't remember gas being under a dollar for me.  I remember it being right around a dollar, and I remember people being happy about it being lower than it had been in the earlier part of the nineties.  I don't have a clue what the cost of gas was before I was driving.  It didn't matter to me before I was paying for it.

I think gas might have been more expensive in the south than it was elsewhere in the country.  It's generally more expensive in Alabama and Tennessee than it is in Missouri.  I am reminded of this every time I drive home.  The most expensive it's ever been for me was in 2008, when pretty much every gas station in Tennessee had it at $4.25.  I kept driving past station after station, hoping it would eventually be under four bucks, but it never was.  It had been at something like $3.85 when I had stopped for gas in Kentucky.  (The Kentucky price was pretty much the same as the Missouri and Illinois prices.)

This one Texan dude has kept track of every single time he's gotten gas since 1979.  The data he compiled can be seen here.  The problem with his chart is that it's all for 92/93 octane.  I want to see the 87 octane prices.  Also, looks like the majority of his gas was bought in urban areas.

I feel like it should be easy to find a chart that goes back some decades, has prices for all grades of gas, and has information for the national average as well as various states.  It should be, but I'm not finding it.

If someone can find some decent sites with this sort of info on them, I'd like to see them.

Ok for the longest time gas was at 3.66. I thought for sure it was going to go up from the 3.72 since I had to throw 20 bucks in the tank last week to make sure I didn't run out of gas on my way home from work one night. However it dropped to 3.69 and then 3.66 so I managed to fill up.

Saw this morning it jumped back to 3.79, figured it would. Most of the other stations around were in the 3.70s, so I can't imagine that station I frequent would keep it that low for long.

I tried to stop by Costco for gas last night and it was $3.79.  The line was super long and I was in a hurry, so I decided not to wait and go to the gas station closer to where I needed to be.  There was no wait there, but I paid $3.89.

It was on the news that some stations in the city have hit $4.19, but since I've been laid up on the couch for the last couple days, I don't know if that's widespread.

Kah, using words like laid and widespread are just asking for a certain someone on this board to comment.  But, then again, so is the quote in your signature.  :-)

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Here's to kah getting over being laid up and getting back to gettin' laid. (Assuming, of course, she's not gettin' laid while she's laid up.)
