Anyone know SF, Napa, Tahoe, Yosemite or Monterey?

Posted by Daltons chin dimple on Wednesday, October 10, 2012

I am planning a fly-drive trip into and out of San Francisco next year. 3 weeks, taking in Napa, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and Monterey in a big 'ol loop back to SF.

I have been to SF before but I know nothing about the other places.

Anyone been? Got any recommendations on accommodation or things to see and do? Personal experiences trump reviews any day!

I'll be extremely obvious and recommend Alcatraz. You were already planning on going there, of course. Also, there's a decent record store out in front of Berkeley. There used to be, anyway.

And there's also the trolley thing.

He's already been to SF. You're supposed to talk about the other stuff.

Dammit, Quasar. You were supposed to play along and only recommend SF stuff.

But now it's ruined!

Full House was set in SF.

It's a rare condition, this day and age, to read any good news on the newspaper page.

Urkel was my favorite. His dad was in that Stallone movie where he's in a building and there's this Dutch guy who tells this other guy to shoot out the windows and Stallone has to walk on his hands and his hands get all cut up. I think it was called TrueStart.

He was eventually inoculated. Knocked that varmit right out of his system.

You know what they say: better inoculate than never!

I think they may have a bottle of wine or two in Napa, so you might want to try that.

(Did you really think you would get any help from this group?)

I have not been to any of those places, so I will only respond with sarcastic remarks, if it's alright with you.

You're not going to believe this, but the majority of that fest takes places in September.

So, all the frickin' vaca's Dalty takes, and he never could make it over to Germany to visit the Goits? Sad. So very sad. Probably for the best tho, as he would've tried to steal jubbers away into the night.

Jubbers would not elope with me.  I am, quite literally, half the man that Goiter is.

Just what did he mean, if he didn't mean "inconceivable"? Unthinkable? Impossible? Unbelievable? Unlikely?

It always seemed to me that "inconceivable" worked well enough in the context of the things happening. Sure, one could conceive of Westley doing the things he does, so they aren't technically beyond conception. At the same time, though, the things he does are also possible, thinkable, and believable. We often use "unthinkable," "impossible," and "unbelievable" without meaning them literally.

Westley does nothing supernatural. It may be "unlikely" that he would survive the rope being cut, but it's not like lunging for the cliff side at the last second is a physics-defying impossibility, and it's not like free-scaling a wall is something that can't be done.

I don't think Vizzini means "unlikely." If he meant this, it probably wouldn't even warrant his commentary. You'd be more likely to precede the achievement of an unlikely action with acknowledgement of its unlikelihood than you would be to remark on it after the fact. (I grant you that he does this on a few of the occasions. The cut-rope survival isn't one of them.)

I think he means "inconceivable," and I think he means it figuratively. If we can use "unthinkable," "impossible," or "unbelievable" in this way, why can't he use "inconceivable" in this way? He's essentially saying, "I don't believe it!"

On second thought, Inigo's first language isn't English. What does he know? Also, he trained to fight with a sword nearly his whole only to be bested by someone with, tops, five years' worth of training. What a fucking loser.

It was inconceivable that Westley was mostly dead.

Yosemite

The only thing I know about Yosemite is he's the meanest, roughest, toughest, rip-roarin'-est, he-man stuffest, Edward Everett Horton-est hombre whose ever crossed the Rio Grande and what ever packed a six-shooter
