Battlefield 3

Posted by omicron on Friday, October 14, 2011

Comes out at the end of the month. While I am more of a Modern Warfare kind of guy, I have to admit the BF3 looks great. I also like the fact that it has vehicles and destructible environment, something the MW games lack.

Word is that the big patch is coming on March 27th for PS3. 360 and PC don't have a date yet, but I assume the patch will hit those platforms soon as well.

I think shortening of the AA missile range will kill ground people. Jets will be almost invulnerable now.

As long as they nerf the freaking USAS12 frag rounds, I'll be happy :)

The patch is now out for 360! It comes in the form of a 175MB title update to BF3 and a 1GB download from the marketplace called "Rent A Server Update".  The game will prompt you to download it when you boot it up.

I've already got it downloaded, and I'm looking forward to spending some time with the game to see how everything's different. Hell, I might just rent a custom server for a bit depending on how many MS points I have lying around in my account.

yeah I downloaded it last night too. Didn't play much, only a couple of rounds of TDM, but it sure seemed like there were alot less frag rounds and shotguns in general. Considering they nerfed the frag rounds and lowered the # of pellets in the buckshot, it's not surprising.

Since the patch came out, I've discovered a couple of setups that really worked well for me. The F2000 with iron sights, foregrip, and heavy barrell is pretty much a laser beam. The gun always spit bullets quickly, but now it's even better, IMO. Also, putting the flash supressor on my M249 made it feel a lot more accurate than it did when I first started using it again post-patch.  I've also found that the A91 handles almost the same in close-medium range, so I didn't switch up the attachments for it yet.

Only thing I am really not liking lately is the fact that quick match will drop you into any server.
Many times I've specifically joined a DM game, only to have it rotate to Rush or Conquest next round. Sort of defeats the "What kind of game do you want to play" filter on the quickmatch screen.
Also, I wish there was some way to filter out custom servers. nothing worse than wanting a quick game, only to discover you've joined a server that has 500% tickets and 150% health. I think I played a 45m game of Conquest on Metro last night.

http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/battlereport/show/41184505/2/175088...

37m, and the winning time had 449 tickets left! While it can be fun, and certainly gives you the opportunity to rack up kills, that's just ridiculous.

Yeah, I never use quick match any more. I've found several servers that I liked and put them in my favorites.  I just want to play with normal settings, but so many people have servers with only a single map at 500% ticket counts. That get boring for me rather quickly.

I think custom servers are cool, but I wish that all the official EA servers hadn't disappeared. That way you know that the settings are normal AND you won't randomly get kicked/team switched by whoever owns the server. Maybe I'll rent my own server at some point when I have the extra cash lying around. At least then I can be sure of having a server with settings that I like.

I'm speaking as somebody who loves the big Battlefield maps and as someone who was wary of the Close Quarters DLC when it was announced here.  I think the Close Quarters maps look freaking awesome!

The PS3 Premium people are able to play the new maps this week, and some of them have been posting gameplay footage and map walkthroughs to youtube. I've watched a lot of these videos, and I am even more excited to play them than I was before.  I've purchased Premium myself, so I'll be able to play them firsthand next week.

yup. I got my xbox Live shit squared away and bought it myself. Haven't really seen any stuff on the Armored Kill expansion. Thought they previewed that at E3?

yeah when will CQ be available? The Battlelog page says today, but I checked this morning and the expansion pack isn't available in the store.

I don't know why the Battlelog page said the 11th. The in game calendar said the 12th. Anyway, I just checked, and I have Close Quarters content unlocked as of this morning. I can't wait to play on the new maps later today.

Argh, I checked this morning before I left for work, and I didn't see the CQ pack in the store. Must have released it later. Did you have to go to the store and download it?

Weird, I swear when I talked to you last night Strider I didn't see the new maps on the server browser. Maybe I was drunk :)

Anyways, have played all the new maps and the multilevel design of them is really interesting. I especially like the minimap only showing the level you're on. I was often hearing gunfire, but people don't show up on the map unless you're on the same level as they are.

Conquest games are almost schizophrenic. Since flag captures happen so fast, it's possible to capture a flag, run off and lose that flag a second later :)

Gunmaster Mode is interesting. Very similar to something MW2 has, although in MW2 you only need to get one kill with the weapon to move on. Also, knifing someone sends them back a level, not sure if that happens in Gunmaster. Haven't really seen any details about the game mode, I'll have to do some googling.

Yeah, Gun Master is a lot of fun, as long as you're not getting in late. It's Battlefield's spin on the game mode that I'm pretty sure Counter Strike invented back in the day.

These new maps are completely different than anything else in BF3, and I'm loving that right now. It remains to be seen on whether I will end up playing them long term or not, but for now they are great. Scrap Metal is easily my early favorite.

saw you've been playing BF3 on the pc now. Why'd you get it on that platform? And is it better playing the big 32v32 games?

Downloaded the Armored Kill update this morning, but didn't have a chance to play it. Tried a couple of times, but the game kept locking up. Don't know if it's because all the traffic or I got a corrupt download. Hoping it's just temporary. I'll check tonight when I get home.

You know you've been playing too much BF3 when you stare at a helicopter flying overhead in real life and keep waiting for the orange diamond indicating a lockon to appear. :)
