The Best Show on TV at the moment?

Posted by Daltons chin dimple on Tuesday, November 19, 2013

There is a lot of quality out there at the moment...... and a lot of dross!

So what do you reckon is the best show on TV at the moment and what makes it the best show?

I am thinking it might be The Walking Dead. It has characters I care about, all really well acted. It balances quiet moments and good plot development with jump out of your seat surprises. I think it pushes boundaries with what it does.

Finally, I think it's production values are sky high.

What do you guys think?

If this week's episode was any more awesome I would have needed fresh pants.

I'm getting close to finishing the third season. I guess I still prefer the comic, but the show's pretty good.

I don't watch enough television to have a good idea about which shows are the best. I've only seen the first season of Mad Men and Breaking Bad. I guess Breaking Bad is off the air now, so maybe it doesn't count anymore. Same goes for Dexter. I only ever saw the one scene from Dexter, and it made me laugh pretty hard. I don't think it was supposed to, even though I'm told it's a show with some funny moments.

I'm ten episodes behind on Doctor Who. I'm going to see if I can catch up before the fiftieth anniversary special.

I've still never seen an episode of Game of Thrones. I have the first two seasons on an external hard drive. I'm sure I'll get around to watching them some day.

Sherlock's pretty good stuff. I'm caught up on that one.

Haven't seen any House of Cards or Boardwalk Empire. I guess House of Cards doesn't count, since it's on Netflix. Is Boardwalk Empire still going on?

Are we allowed to count comedies? It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Curb Your Enthusiasm both make me laugh pretty hard. I think I'm a season or two behind on both.

Haven't seen Downton Abbey. Did people turn against that show, or something? They raved about it for a couple months, then they never mentioned it again.

Downton Abbey is a victim of my personal prejudice against Sunday night costume drama.  Never seen an episode.  Never plan to.

People keep recommending Breaking Bad to me telling me to watch it at my earliest convenience.  It's planned!

Louie is pretty good. It's got the laughs. It's got the sad.

Downtown Abbey is very good, but it is a melodrama and the third season twist upset some fans. Also, it's only on for about two months a year so no wonder there's little chatter. I've heard that the third season of Boardwalk Empire is lacking.

I don't have cable, but I'm springing for new eps of Walking Dead. I agree with Dalty, it's fantastic all the way around.

I quite like Boardwalk still - but at the end of the day it is basically a limited concept anyway.  Wiseguy A is running booze for Wiseguy B - Wiseguy C tries to muscle in.  Rinse, repeat.

Walking Dead beats it.  And seriously, last nights episode had me jumping out of my seat.

I haven't jumped into season 3 yet, but Homeland surely needs to be in the running for any "Best Show" competitions.

Boardwalk Empire season 3 was certainly still good (Bobby Cannavale!), but pales in comparison to season 4. They've been having a fantastic year so far. It's like watching a novel. Oh and it helps that Michael Shannon and Jeffrey Wright are two of the most naturally creepy actors on the planet. SO good.

Oh and GoT essentially brought back the concept of appointment television. That's gotta count for something, right?

Hmmmmm.  GoT vs Dead.   It's a tough call.

I always go with the one that costs less to watch.

That's the one.

Of course, if I'm willing to steal (and I often am), they're all free.

I may watch Game of Thrones someday. Porn is pretty heavily regulated in Japan. If my access to porn is compromised (pixelated genitalia? No thank you!), it might make Game of Thrones feel like more of a must-see sort of thing.

Assuming we get to go to Japan, I mean.

We're hoping pretty hard. It's our last chance to be rich! (Being rich = getting above the poverty line.)

HBO is being stupid about releasing their content online. Hey, HBO, I want to give you money to watch your show, but you won't let me. I have to get a cable subscription plus a subscription to HBO to get online access to their shows, and that's just not worth it unless I plan on watching more than one program they air... which I don't.

So fucking retarded.

But don't they only get real ad revenue based on their subscription figures?  If they release online, even as a subscription, then less people would get their full package and they would make less money?????

The premium channels like HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, etc. don't have any ads.

And AMC, the home of The Walking Dead, has a shit-ton of commercials during each episode, but they still make episodes available for purchase on Amazon Instant the day after they air.

The most recent Walking Dead episodes are usually free to watch on AMC's website. They currently have episodes 3-6 from the fourth season available for streaming.

They're even nice enough to tell you how long you have until the episode is pulled.

Don't know if folks in the UK can take advantage of this.

In the UK it's on Fox, Fox HD, Fox +1 and Fox On Demand.  24hrs after US broadcast.

I think I've got it covered.

They're only free to watch if you have a cable TV subscription with one of their partner companies. Otherwise, you can't watch them at all on the AMC website.

Ah. Those sneaky bastards!

I finished the third season earlier today. I went to the AMC website and was surprised to see that they offered the show for viewing. I just assumed they were there for anybody to watch. I didn't actually click on one of the videos until after reading your post. When I did, it asked me for my AMC provider info and left me feeling like a straight-up chump.

A lot of shows are available to watch through tubeplus.com. I usually use that site to catch the opening parts of shows that I started taping a tad too late.
