If I ever went to AICN, maybe I'd know who that is.

It's a wretched hive of scum and villainy (or so I've heard).

He was probably the douchiest reviewer the site ever had. Everybody hated him.

He banned me.

AICN banned him.

Vengeance!

A lot of the AICN hate is unwarranted. It's still in its own weird way highly readable, and hey, they were pretty much the first on the scene.

That said Kidd really was terrible. Harry catches a lot of shit but he is like Teflon, it just bounces off. Kidd just plain sucked.

Rumour is that Harry told him he was "Too negative" in a review and binned him.  Surely critique is down to the individual?

I think a big part of it was how antagonistic he was toward nearly every single movie he reviewed. To begin with, the reviews were all titled "Billy the Kidd vs. X." (For example, "Billy the Kidd vs. 42," or "Billy the Kidd vs. The Expendables 2.") It probably would have gone unnoticed if he had given positive reviews on occasion, or it would have been dismissed as shtick. Instead, it seemed like he had a bone to pick with every single movie. I think he might have written five positive reviews in the time he was there. Out of hundreds.

The negativity also didn't seem earnest. He came across like a college freshman trying to prove he was smarter than every movie he watched. A lot of college freshmen are introduced to critical thinking a year or two before they're able to handle it responsibly. They come away from the introduction with the impression that the only way to prove their intellectual mettle is to tear down a work.

Some of the movies were fish in a barrel when it came to tearing them down, but a lot of them were movies Metacritic would classify as having "Universal Acclaim." There's nothing wrong with going against the grain where critical darlings are concerned. When you do it, though, you need to convince others that you have sound reasons for it. He wasn't able to do this much of the time. When I say "critical darlings," I don't just mean the pretentious arthouse flicks. I mean the solid action movies, the "intelligent" (for lack of a better word) kids' movies, and the generally well-received genre movies.

Usually, when a critic rails against a specific set of genres, it emerges that he simply doesn't like that sort of movie. It usually happens that the same critic is more approving of a different genre, and it will be generally understood that he is easier on that sort of movie. His readers are able to pick up on his personal tastes and adjust accordingly. With the Kidd, he seemed to despise everything. There was no way to adjust for genre preferences, since he appeared to want to tear everything down.

I'm a cynic and a malcontent, and I'm famous for disliking movies that a lot of people like, but I've written my fair share of positive reviews. I don't think people would question whether or not I like movies. (They might do it jokingly, of course.) People did question this with the Kidd. They wondered aloud whether or not he went into every screening with a chip on his shoulder.

People joked that he was the "anti-Harry," and that his presence helped balance the site. I guess there's something to that. His writing was passable. There are better writers on the site. I was going to say he comes across as smug, but I think it would be more accurate to say that he comes across as arrogant.

There are other reviewers out there famous for trolling with positive reviews of movies that are otherwise universally hated or and negative reviews for movies that are otherwise beloved. Armond White comes to mind. With him and other critics like him, it's at least somewhat clear they're trolling or trying to attract attention to their sites. There are also people who come across as general grumps--you know, the grizzled Statler and Waldorfs of the world. There's something charming about these sorts of folks.

The Kidd just came off as a douche. He came off as a douche in writing, and he even came off as a douche in person. The one video I've seen of him has him sharing the stage with Bruce Campbell. Campbell was clearly working the crowd, and the Kidd clearly should have sat his ass down to let Campbell do his thing. Instead, the Kidd stays up there, almost like he wants the crowd there to recognize him as Campbell's equal. When he laughs, he laughs on cue, and he does it in this obnoxious chuckling way that makes him seem almost like a Christian Bale character. He's comes across during his time onstage like Patrick Bateman--if, that is, Patrick Bateman were a self-professed movie geek. And the whole time he's up there, he exudes this "look what I've given unto you lowly cinefiles" smarm.

I think Patrick Bateman is a good comparison, really. He's a false man. There's nothing there.

I should mention that Bruce Campbell was there promoting the Evil Dead remake. The Kidd's review of the Evil Dead remake was, of course, scathing. Like all his other reviews, it seemed to have an agenda.

All that said, it's possible that Harry fired the Kidd for being negative about a movie (or two) a studio had paid AICN to promote.

I'm sure, in the Kidd's own mind, he was the only AICN staffer with "integrity." If it had felt like he had genuine problems with these movies, it would have been one thing. To me, at least, it didn't feel that way.

Harry mentions in a post that the Kidd would also ban people for little to no reason and then lie and say he hadn't done it to Harry. I don't doubt Harry on this point. The people who were getting banned were getting banned in the Kidd's threads. I can't imagine another admin other than the Kidd would set up a police state in the Kidd's threads. On the other hand, maybe the other admins disliked him so much that they framed him.

This isn't to say the Kidd wouldn't make valid criticisms, or that I disagreed with all of his negative reviews. Sometimes, though, it did seem he would claim to dislike a movie on the basis of a nitpick or two. It would be akin to saying you disliked Who Framed Roger Rabbit Hoskins's British accent occasionally broke through. (Absolutely no kid I knew ever noticed this, by the way. It's the kind of thing you notice only after you get a little older, find out he's not an American, and start listening for it. This only really holds true for American kids from my generation or after. I'm sure Dalty went into Roger Rabbit knowing Hoskins was a Brit.)

It was mostly the way he made those criticisms that got under people's skin. It was antagonistic and pissy-sounding. I've read and respected plenty of negative reviews of movies I'd already seen and liked. That never happened with a Kidd review.

I didn't say "Clubbing It."

If I were in a band called "Clubbing It," I'd end every show by beating baby animals to death. It would be like Gallagher, but I'd be destroying things with brains.

If he had, I'd be doubly glad the Kidd was gone. Who knows how much longer the Kidd might have hung around if Harry had died before firing him?

Whatever the case, I don't want Harry to die. I don't anybody to die who doesn't want to die. Death sucks.

By the way, I'm sure this had something to do with Harry firing the Kidd.

Harry simply did what any other sensible person would do in the face of certain financial disaster: run out and buy hundreds of thousands of DVDs.
