He'll be properly lonely if he plays this wrong.  There is a geo-political shift underway in Asia that means this is all a bit wobbly.

China has no love for the DPRK, but they do like the fact that it is a persistent thorn in the side of the white devils.

Yes, but I understand that this latest test has them...on edge. Aren't there enough crazy people in the world who have control of nuclear weapons? You know, like every single country that has them already.

How many times does Superman have to fly all our nukes into the sun before we realize it's pointless to make more?

That's why we need to ban them off the face of the Earth. Or at least get started on that for real.

Just like mah man Chuck Hagel wants to do.

I think it's likely to go the other way somewhat.

- China and US relations are worse than they were in 2009 at the time of the last test.

- However China has been showing signs of wanting to engage more with the International community.

- At the same time there are significant tensions over a large number of disputed territories across the region and armed face-offs are a more regular occurence.

- The new found wealth in old Communist bastions like Vietnam and China is creating an affluent middle class who are demanding more of their leaders.....  like rights!

- Japan has elected a new leader who is openly against their post-WWII pacifist constitution and believes they should build up their military and be more influential in their region.

- The new South Korean president-elect is a man whose Mother was killed by a North Korean assassin.

- US focus is shifting Eastwards from Europe.... maybe even Eastwards from the Middle East.

All in all, a heady combination!

Your logic is flawless.  East Asia is definitely looking stormy right now.

I still have hope, naive though it may be, that continued diplomacy is the only way to go with NK.  The military alternative is seductive, of course, even to a guy like me.  But the long-term consequences of such an engagement are totally unpredictable.  No-one would win.

The first strike would have to be massive and completely co-ordinated, making Desert Storm et al look like a Mexican birthday party.  Followed almost immediately by a massive ground invasion.  Seriously, you are talking a magnum launch of almost every plane from every carrier in the US Navy, plus SK airforce, with multiple strikes on pre-designated targets arriving within minutes of each other, plus most subs and missile frigates emptying their Tomahawk stores on a cycle.

This is because the North has 000's of artillery pieces and 00's of rockets all pointed directly at Seoul, with the city as e primary target of whatever the NK airforce can get up and flying.

If they are not massively dented, with the command and control structure seriously slowed down and complete air superiority, then a major Asian city, a financial centre and capital of a main ally ceases to exist within an hour of the first shot being fired.

In short, it can be done, but I don't think anyone has the balls to risk it.  Only thing in favour is that regimes like these tend to have top heavy, centralised command & control structures with very little latitude or empowerment of front line troops, ground commanders to make decisions or act on their own.

Also, the Chinese would have to be kept out of it and supported re: refugees flooding Northwards.

True, but is this a question of no-one having the balls to intervene militarily; or everyone in this case having the good sense not to?  So many examples in the past 10-20 years of operations that were supposed to quick, surgical, initially supported by the public to some extent... that ended up becoming long, seemingly endless occupations.  And I am not merely talking about Iraq here.

Ah, screw it, just send in Iron Man and/or Captain America.

Both Afghanistan and Iraq were got into without a clear exit strategy.  It seems to be an American military theme.  Very good at starting, not so good at the nation building bit afterwards.  Blair was particularly vilified by military commanders for not focussing on exit when he committed to join the Iraq campaign.

I have a feeling there was never any serious intention of exiting, in any event.  The neocons wanted a military base in the heart of a destabilized middle east, for decades if need be.

In any event, getting back to NK, look... if we could deal with and contain a Soviet Union armed with thousands of massive nuclear weapons, we can surely deal with the likes of Kim Jong-Un.  He's a lightweight.

It could also be all the BBW porn I've been watching. BOOM!

The big guy only has to flex his muscles to put his power on display and to make you fear the consequences of messing with him.

It's the little guy who has never tasted power who is more likely to get a gun and shoot someone to let you know you shouldn't mess with him.

In the so-called "Cold War," both of the big guys were responsible for the deaths of millions over four decades..

North Korea is sort of a by-product of that era.  As far as I am aware, they have only brought death and destruction to their own people, and to the people who they perceived as invaders.

Properly contained and dealt with, they can be prevented from launching the kind of holocaust that some in the West fear.

While four million deaths over four decades is a striking figure, the number of casualties could have been a thousand times larger if it had actually come to a global nuclear war. It may sound dismissive to say this, but compared to the possibility of a nuclear apocalypse, the military conflicts resulting from the Cold War were the equivalent of the superpowers flexing their muscles.
