The Cabin in the Woods (BIG EFFIN' SPOILERS!!!!)

Posted by KingVoyeur on Tuesday, April 17, 2012

There's no way to really talk about this movie without spoiling it, soooooo.....discuss. I loved it, except for the final shot. With all the exposition and imagery that immediately preceded it, I was expecting something more...Lovecraftian than a giant hand. That was kind of lame.

I also loved the Hellraiser references. I kind of wish that monster would show up in the Hellraiser remake, he was pretty creepy (but he's no Pinhead).

Good send-up of the usual horror tropes, and commentary on us as the audience. One could argue that the film's meta-ness undercut the scares, but I'm not sure it was ever meant to be truly scary (though it has a few good scares). Loved the slasher send-up of the first half, and loved the all-out chaos when the nightmares were unleashed on the lab crew. The speakerphone bit with Mordichai was hilarious. Also, being a theater geek, when we saw "Merman" on the betting odds-board, for an instant my mind flashed to a zombified Ethel Merman coming after the group. Talk about terrifying!

I liked when the Japanese girls dispatched their evil ghostie, and Richard Jenkins was all "Fuck you!" and "Fuck you!" Jack and I were discussing afterwards, and I was wondering how much manipulation was involved in putting together the group that went to the cabin. Also I don't remember how often they had to do the ritual. Was it annually? Over all, a fun time at the theater, 'specially since Horror Comedy is like my favorite genre.

Just got back from seeing this. So freakin' awesome! Loved the screaming at the Japanese kids.

Also the hellraiser guy, whom I believe was called Fornicus, Lord of bondage and pain. I'm going to steal him and toss my players at him during a campaign.

But yeah, the big hand was a bit anti-climatic, but that and some parts being too dark were my only complaints.

I also felt the cast did a nice job of one-shot showcasing their characters so that you could really feel that something was off later. Example, Thor being a nice and level-headed boyfriend and then being offset with his jock-mentality later on. I know it's pointed out, but I felt they actors pulled it off well.

I can't wait to buy this when it hits DVD. Mostly to check the whiteboard, wikipedia has a list of the monsters on it (witches, and sexy witches) but I want to confirm them.

I was pleased the geeky guy survived his apparent death, because I couldn't believe they would have the cleverness of him using his scoping bong to club the zombie with go for naught.

Here's a link to an interview with the director from Aint It Cool News, there's a pic about halfway down that has a shot of the board with everything on it.

I want to go back and freeze-frame the shot of the monster cubes to see what all was in them. I really only remember the Shining twins, the giant spider (which I'm disappointed didn't turn up again), and the giant snake.

Also, does anyone know if the shots from the other countries' rituals were references to horror flicks from those countries? The only one I remember is a castle on a hill blowing up, I think that was the one in Spain.

According to THIS article, TCitW is not getting a theatrical release in Australia (somewhere Dirty Wookie is doing some Ron Burgundy-style fist pumps).  The best part of that article is the comments section where fans (of Whedon, I guess) are whining about the news and many are claiming they will order the DVD/BR from the US or UK so that the local distributor won't get their money, which is just weird.  One of the commenters did make some pretty good points about how you'd think they could use advertising to link the movie to 'The Avengers' (the Whedon connection), and the movie also stars Hemsworth, who's a local.  There was probably a time when an Aussie starring in an American movie was a big deal, but not anymore I guess.

Doesn't Dirty Wookie show up on these boards about every 5 years stating it just feels like the right time to come back? At least now we don't have Ulic to run him off with his grammar policing.

I just remembered I could finally look at this thread.

Unfortunately (fortunately?), I don't really have anything to contribute to it.
