Can I escape the cable monster?

Posted by neglet on Saturday, January 19, 2013

So my husband and I are moving from Detroit to Chicago at the end of March. Right now we have WOW cable TV/internet, but they jacked up the price twice in the first four months after the initial year of service, so I'm sick of them. I hear Comcast service is horrible and they are evil anyway. I've had DirecTV, and got sick of weather interrupting my shows. So I want to get all 21st century and eliminate cable and stream all my entertainment.

I figured I'd ask you geeks your advice. First, what kind of ISP should I use? Second, what are your favorite sources for streaming TV programs and sports? Any other tips for me?

Jubbers and I have Charter Internet. It's decent and it's reasonably priced. We don't do cable TV. I don't really miss it, since I never really had it. We stream Netflix and Hulu Plus through Jubbers's Wii. It gives us variety (with Hulu Plus, we have 700-plus movies from the Criterion Collection, which is pretty sweet), and the cost of the two together is something like sixteen bucks.

Folks say good stuff about Amazon's streaming thing. I don't think we could handle more access to shows and movies than we currently have, so it's probably best we stay away.

I know I could live with getting TV shows from Hulu or Amazon or Netflix; we watch most of those on DVR anyway so I'm not so concerned about being timely. I watch a lot of sports, though, and it seems I can't get live football (nfl or espn 3) unless it is through a cable provider, or at least Internet provided by a cable company. What do people use nowadays instead of VCRs to record from broadcast tv? Is there a decent non-TiVo DVR?

Not sure about that. I only follow college football, and I only ever look at stats. Don't like watching live games. Following live stats, on the other hand, is fine.

I'd look it up for you if I weren't so lazy.

I do know that espn.go.com offers live streaming of certain games and events. Some of the stuff they only offer to people with specific cable Internet providers. I'm not really sure how it works.

If you have a friend or family member willing to set up a Slingbox for you, that might be an option. The box is pretty pricey (close to $200), but I don't think you have to pay for a subscription or anything else once you have the box. There are also websites like wwitv.com and stream2watch.me that stream live content from different TV stations around the world. They're kinda spotty (and pretty shady), though, so I wouldn't recommend bothering with them.

Negs, let me know if you find anything out from other sources.  I am also fed up with cable.  I had Comcast for years and their service was horrible.  They kept having outages and then you had to deal with their shitty customer service.  I now have Verizon Fios, which is great, except that I pay $170/month for cable, internet and phone...with no movie channels.  I have a friend that built his own "cable" box that is basically a PC for your TV that has Hulu and Netflix and other programs installed so he can watch what he wants.  I believe he even figured out how to get local channels but that may have changed with the switch to digital.  The problem with his setup was that he couldn't watch sports.  He wasn't a sports guy, so it didn't bother him.  I can't go more than about 18 hours without seeing some kind of sporting event or Sportscenter.  That is the main reason why I continue to pay Verizon their ridiculous fees.

Turn your head and cough!

I get both GOD Channel and Playboy.  They are quite close on the EPG.

We may go with another cable provider, RCN, they have a relatively cheap Internet package that allows access to espn3.com. That may give us enough sports coverage to live with.... Still debating whether to go with a Slingbox and Amazon Prime, I need to figure out the best way to connect other tvs to content.

My only option is Comcast. Therefore, I must love Comcast. They are better than Cats. I'd choose them again and again. Their 250Gb/mo limit is awesome.

I think I dropped the ball on including an "Amazing Alexander" embed the last time Jakey referenced it. Not this time! Behold:

Jennifer Lawrence was on SNL last week. She's pretty.

Apparently she's also fat. That's what teens on the Internet are saying, at least.

It's good to know we haven't fucked up our youth by priming them to expect all attractive women to keep to bulimic supermodel standards of health.

I like Jennifer Lawrence. Although her facial features are a strange mix of Lindsay Lohan and Renée Zellweger, they look better on her than they do on either of the other two.

Looks like I'm never the first one to point out these celebrity similarities :(

Now you've ruined her.  I will always think of Zellweger's scrunched up face when basking in Lawrence's loveliness.

I like that Lawrence kind of digs being oogled, but doesn't care too much about her weight, and that she pretty much just says whatever the hell she wants.

Also, I've dug Bradley Cooper since Alias, but damn if he hasn't gotten sexier. And he speaks French.

Yeah, I totally get why the girls go gaga for Cooper.
