Christian Slater does not mix well with TV

Posted by Quasar on Wednesday, May 15, 2013

But that doesn't stop him from trying (bless his little heart!)

First there was My Own Worst Enemy on NBC. It didn't look very interesting so I didn't watch it. I seem to recall Magnum at Excelsior liked it. It was cancelled after 9 episodes.

Then there was The Forgotten on ABC. It didn't look very interesting either so I didn't watch it. It was cancelled after 17 episodes.

Then there was Breaking In on Fox. It looked kind of funny, it had Michael Rosenbaum (Lex from Smallville), but I knew it would be cancelled because it starred Christian Slater. It aired a few episodes and then went away, presumably forever. Imagine my surprise when a second season appeared! So I downloaded and watched the first season, and it actually was pretty funny! Unfortunately it was cancelled 5 episodes into the second season (12 aired episodes total).

And in the fall he has a new show called Mind Games on ABC. (What, no CBS? Fuck you, Slater! Call CBS!) Anyway, it doesn't look very good either, and obviously will be cancelled very shortly (possibly record setting?) Also it should be pointed out that Slater starred in a terrible movie called Mindhunters. Full circle?

The real question here is who keeps hiring him for these roles? Does he bankroll each new venture himself in a desperate attempt to jump-start his stalled career?

I enjoyed Breaking In. Decent stuff.

I didn't even hate that kid from Reaper in it!

Christian Slater doesn't really mix well with radio, either:

Or cinema:

Goiter once told me how he thought Nick Cave borrowed heavily from Leonard Cohen, and I'm sure at the time I was all like, "Yeah, why not, whatever you say Goits!" I didn't really have a frame of reference, you see. Boy, was my face red when I first heard that song from the Pump Up the Volume trailer and, to my surprise, found out that it wasn't a Nick Cave song.

Not that being influenced by other musicians invalidates your music or anything.

I think I might have thrown Tom Waits in there, too. Their influence is tough to deny. Some argument could be made that Cave and Waits are friends and that the sonic relationship is at least partially symbiotic, but Waits already had five albums out by the time Cave put out his first one.

I think Cave and Waits both might have gotten started around the same time, but they were half a world away from one another, and Cave was slower to get a record deal. Also, Waits sold better in the UK than the US. An album of his (Small Change) went gold in Australia in '76. Cave was still a few years a way from putting out his first album. This was pre-Bad Seeds, when he was with The Birthday Party. The first Bad Seeds Album was still nearly a decade away.

Waits can get a little more out there than Cave. He can get a little more out there than pretty much anybody except, like, Jandek. It's hard to get any more out there than Jandek.

Pump up the Volume
is pretty shitty, but it has a fair soundtrack.

I had a bit of a cheat sheet with Cohen, since Cave was in I'm Your Man.

So if Adam watched a Christian Slater TV show, would it accidentally create some kind of perpetual motion machine?

Have we yet addressed the very likely possibility that Adam got Last Resort cancelled? Because I don't think the Atlantic would be enough to keep Dalty from getting at Adam's throat with all the vengeance his limitless fortune could empower if that were the case.

Nah.  I am still 5 episodes behind on Last Resort and haven't found the motivation to catch up.  Adam is safe.

Show Cancelling Bastard is bloody well watching Dr Who though!!!!

The last episode of Last Resort is probably the finest episode of television I've ever seen. You have to watch the four before it, though, to be able to appreciate it.

But Dalty, if Adam hadn't gotten the show cancelled, you'd HAVE the motivation to get caught up.

Work with me here!

I downloaded all of Last Resort and by the time I was ready to start getting around to them, it was cancelled. So I figured "Meh, why bother." I'll get to it when Netflix starts carrying it. I hope I'm not still to blame! :(

Poor Shawn Ryan can't catch a break these days. Still baffled as to why his Beverly Hills Cop pilot didn't get picked up. That seemed like a procedural TV show I'd actually watch.

OH and I'm still yet to watch the Doctor Who with the submarine. I'll get there one of these days and then the show will be gone! GONE! MWAHAHAHAHA

It'll regenerate.
