Comic discussions

If you like comics (and hopefully read at least one), throw in your 2.

Dammit, I forgot that Doorways #2 came out this week. I glanced over the indie section at the comic book shop, but apparently it didn't stand out to me, and since I didn't have it in my mind front and center, I never found it. Of course it could've been sold out. But since I wasn't looking for it, I DON'T KNOW!!

Apparently I should always pass on Doorways. Yesterday I scoured the shelves for last week's, and it was nowhere to be found, so I asked at the register when they'd be getting more in. They had some but had already placed them in the back issue boxes, and had already marked it down to $1! Fuck, that's practically free!!!

So I heard the Human Torch died?

Nobody ever dies in comic books.  They will find another, alternate reality 2, pre-Infinite Crisis, reborn from DNA taken during the Sectret Wars, Jonny Storm or some other bullshit.

They didn't die in the comics. They only died in flashbacks.

She will come back at some point.  Resurrected by some alien organism or some time travel shennanigans.

They also brought her back in Ultimate Spider-Man, which I guess is supposed to be all right, since they were re-writing history.

He looks like a German supermodel.

I hope it's grim and gritty!  All super hero movies need to be grim and gritty!  I'm not five, after all.  I need hard R content.

Your sarcasm will not dissuade movie studios who've seen a grim and gritty super hero movie gross 500 million domestically.

Unfortunately, the R-rating for this movie will stem from Captain America's crotchless pants, which he is cleverly concealing in the image above by using his shield.

That's not a shield.  It's a space station.

That's it, jraven56.  You just sent Quasar into a deep depression.

Unlike us, he wasn't a preteen when it came out.

Everybody has to have one good movie in them don't they?  Possibly apart from Brett Ratner.

Good ol' radiation.  It was Stan Lee's go-to power up (Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man) until he lighted on godliness (Thor), ingenuity (Iron Man),  magic (Dr. Strange), and mutation (X-Men).

I think Amazing Fantasy #15 (Spider-Man's first appearance) and Journey Into Mystery #83 (Thor's first appearance) were both marked as August '62 releases.  I'm not sure which one he wrote first.  I'm sure a little research would reveal the answer.

Whatever the case, if he wrote Amazing Fantasy #15 first, it would present a clear line of radiation-powered creations shifting to characters powered other ways.  Maybe somebody said, "Stan, it's too easy.  Plus, you don't want kids going out and getting irradiated on purpose, do you?"  Maybe not.

Feel free to double-check the facts on the above.

I'm not taking into account the original Human Torch, Captain America, or Namor, since they weren't Lee's creations, and were already two-decade-plus established characters by the time Lee started creating heroes left and right.  I'm also not taking into account whatever lesser knowns Lee created in between the FF and the X-Men.  Because I don't wanna.

I'm not really sure why I felt compelled to write any of the above.  I'd tell you to skip it, but it's too late for you if you've made it this far.  I owe you one, I guess.  (IOU: 1 No-Prize.)

So, anyway, Lee created the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Dr. Strange, and the X-Men in the space of about two years, and they formed the majority of the foundation on which an empire would be built.  Not too shabby.

Don't forget Daredevil. Radiation to the eyes. And for the most part, kids couldn't just go irradiate themselves. They'd need cosmic radiation, gamma radiation, or an irradiated spider in order to complete the process. And then even if they got an irradiated spider to bite them, they'd still need to develop web shooters and web fluid.
