If you like comics (and hopefully read at least one), throw in your 2.

Same goes for Klaus Janson and Art Thibert.

Does Art Thibert even work anymore?

Oddly enough, in retrospect, his art was a lot better than the art of some of those awful early nineties artists he was inking. Still, though, he was a better inker than artist.

I guess there's some charm to Klaus Janson's art, but it generally annoys me. It's like if Frank Miller got drunk and used nothing but a dull pencil.

Here is the awesome comic I alluded to earlier.

Some of Death's warriors have been heroes, too.

I'm surprised they'd use Hyperion and Nighthawk so soon after the Squadron Supreme limited series--even if it did take place outside of the Earth-616verse. (Granted, he got his start as an "evil Superman" spoof character in Squadron Sinister.) And why is Mar-Vell on the bad side? Is he playing double agent? (I see they say "FIFTEEN AVENGERS," but I'm only counting fourteen. Did Hank Pym go microscopic?)

Drax, Dracula, Terrax, the Green Goblin, the Swordsman were all proper baddies. (Though didn't Swordsman fake being a hero to get into the Avengers acting on some other bad guy's behalf at one point?) Red Guardian was good, as far as I know. (I'm pretty sure he's the one above the knight-looking dude who's probably supposed to be the guy Black Knight will be fighting when the two forces square off.)

If they're warriors of Death, I'm guessing that means they're all supposed to be characters who were otherwise dead in 1987.

Do you still own the comic? If not, I'm betting I can find you an electronic copy.

I actually have 2 copies of the comic. The first one I bought, which is pretty beat up, and when I signed up to have all my comics delivered through Mile High Comics, I checked the button to send me annuals of series I was subscribed to, they sent me all the annuals which had long since been out, so I got multiple copies of a few. I was actually glad to get a multiple copy of this one, however.

The premise was that the Grandmaster was dead, and had had his brother the Collector kill the 2 factions of Avengers and trick them into battling each other in order to distract Death to the point that the Grandmaster could overpower her and gain control of Death's domain. (all that happened in the West Coast Avengers Annual). In this comic, the Avengers challenged the Grandmaster to a game, so he created a team of dead characters (heroes & villains alike) to face off against the Avengers. The Grandmaster then sent bombs across the galaxy, and then dispatched a group of Avengers and a group from his team, and if the Avengers succeeded in disarming the bomb, they won. His team would do anything they could to keep the bomb intact until it exploded. The Avengers usually succeeded in disarming/destroying the bombs, but most ended up dying in the process.

I was curious about the cover's claim as well since it said 15 Avengers. The Silver Surfer wasn't an Avenger, and had come to warn the Avengers and been tossed into the mix, so I wondered if he was one of the 15. I counted 14 also. The only person missing off the cover is Tigra, so I guess they are counting the Silver Surfer as one of the 15.

Nighthawk and Hyperion aren't members of the Squadron Supreme. The Squadron Sinister was actually different people, put together by the Grandmaster (I believe) to fight the Avengers. I think Nighthawk was a real person, but Hyperion was created out of clay or something. There was one other member of the Squadron Sinister, Speed Demon I think he was called. This Nighthawk was the one who became a part of the Defenders.

I actually have both of those WCA comics pictured. I was big into that series for several years. Mainly cause I really liked Hawkeye.

Does still being able to name pretty much all the characters on that cover mean I've wasted most of my life?

I found the annual and downloaded it. I'll read it when I get a chance.

I have an insane amount of knowledge about all the dead guys because I was also buying the Official Handbooks of the Marvel Univserse, which were in the Books of the Dead section when I started collecting. Naturally since I loved that annual so much, and all the dead guys make an appearance. I'd never actually read a comic with the evil Hyperion in it before or since that Annual. The knight guy on the cover is the original Black Knight (The Avengers member is Black Knight III IIRC), who wielded the Ebony Blade back in King Arthur's time. I was happy with all the encounters except the one with Thor, because it pissed me off how the Thor encounter went down. Thor definitely should've been able to easily destroy his bomb without resorting to what he ended up doing.

Actually, since you offered, I will take a copy of that digital comic. It beats digging my copy out of the trunk it's been packed away in for years.

BTW, Goits, Hank Pym is on that cover (obviously didn't go microscopic). He's the one to the left of Iron Man in red holding some device. And in case you don't know him, that's Dr. Druid below him. I was surprised he was a member of the Avengers, but I knew him from an appearance he made years earlier in Incredible Hulk. He fucks up in the Annual (as all least known characters are apt to do). He goes for the win, when all he had to do was settle for the stalemate.

I see it's Pym now that I have the digital copy. It was too small for me to make out, even though I probably should have been able to recognize him.

I know Doctor Druid. He was featured in Infinity War, and then later in the Secret Defenders (they try to make him look less like a schmuck in that, but since it was the early-mid nineties, that meant making him look "bad ass," which meant making him look even worse), though I don't I knew him before that.

I bet he showed up in Doctor Strange a lot. I liked Doctor Strange, but the series wasn't really around when I was collecting seriously. I doubt I have more than twenty issues of it. I inherited some of the ones I have from my (now ex-) stepbrother, who decided he was too old for comics when he went into the navy.

You'll need to download a comic book reader like CDisplay to read it if you don't already have one. (You can also unzip the files and look at the individual JPEGs, but it's more of a hassle.)

I agree Quasar, the Thor/Hawkeye/Pym section was crappy because of the way he did it. IIRC, several other sections had a hero destroying the bomb, but for some reason Thor just wrapped it up in a mystical vortex to prevent it from destroying a fifth of the universe.

Still remember Hawkeye's line to the Swordsman. "So long, swordsy, I'd like to say it's nice to see you, but why should I lie?"

Also, the reason Pym was in a red jumpsuit and not antman/giantman because it was a period of his life where he gave up superheroing and was more of a gadget guy. He had all kinds of scientific stuff shrunken in his pockets and would enlarge them during a fight.

Holy christ on a cracker, I can't believe I remember this stuff and am quite ashamed at myself that I do :)

I actually like the West Coast Avengers annual that was a companion to this. It had the teams fighting each other, rather than dead villians.

I didn't like that one as much because:

a) Al Milgrom's substandard art

b) the dialogue (such as Wonder Man saying "oh yeah!" or "take that!" while punching Thor. Ok, I don't think he actually said "take that", but it was nearly as bad. (It might have been "Right on!")

c) I thought it was a stretch that both teams believed the other was being controlled, so they had to beat the crap out of each other (considering they were all carrying on a conversation while fighting, you'd think someone would come to the conclusion of hey, why don't we just sit down and talk this out?)

d) apparently while 2 Avengers were fighting, the other Avengers sat around and watched, keeping tabs on which team was ahead (because every fight started out with the current score of wins and losses in the dialogue)

I don't. Wikipedia says it was a Marvel UK thing. Tell us about it, Dalterino.

It was a toy line expansion, kinda like Transformers or He-Man. Basically, giant robotic dinosaurs smashing the shit out of each other on a faraway planet. Two different sides (Red and Blue) with some political infighting and in the middle a crashed Earth spaceship - full of convicts if I remember rightly.

It was bloody brilliant, to my very young eyes!

When you mentioned Zoids, I thought you were talking about these guys:

Then I wondered how old you were if you consider 1999 your youth.

I don't consider 1999 my youth. In 1999 I was one year away from marriage, 2 years away from divorce, and planning my Millennium trip to San Francisco then Lake Tahoe snowboarding. And now I feel old. I was still chatting to some of you guys though..... just!

My Zoids were the Marvel UK thing, same as I only got Battle of The Planets, not Gatchaman.

So it turns out the Brightest Day series was just an excuse to resurrect Swamp Thing (and maybe Aquaman). I have never read Swamp Thing, so I'm not sure I care.

Swamp Thing is a fan favorite. Personally, I always preferred Man Thing. (Ironic that Man Thing is more swampish and Swamp Thing is more mannish?)

No comic store stop for me today. Just isn't anything out that I'm interested in. I was getting Incredible Hulks, but only picked up the first issue in the Savage Land, as the art took a turn for the worse. The cover of this week's issue looks like it's going to a new story arc, but the art looks reeeeeal wonky. Other than that, there's a bunch of one-shots that don't look particularly appealing.
