So what was up with the whole "Death of Spider-man" comic all sealed up? Did Spider-man really die, and should I care?

Yeah, first the Punisher shot Spidey who took the bullet for Cap, then Spidey fought all his other enemies who had tracked him to his house, then he fought Osborn (in full on demon-mode, I dunno why he looks like that, I came late to the party) and they took each other out.

At the end, I was kind of "meh". I mean, it's not really surprising when there's a banner at the top of every issue for the past 6 months proclaiming "Death of Spider-Man".

Ultimate universe characters stay dead, supposedly.

Well, Ultimate Spider-man is supposed to keep going, but with someone other than Parker in the suit. Curious to see how that plays out.

Ah, death of Ultimate Spider-man. That makes more sense. I bought some of the Ultimate titles at the beginning, but got tired of them after awhile, and now actively hate them because they fuck up the movies.

I was hoping GRRM's Doorways would go longer than a 4 part adaption of the proposed pilot. They had a six script order, so I thought maybe they'd adapt some (or all) of them as well. Apparently not.

So DC gave out a free preview issue of "The New 52!" today. It basically has all the same preview info (book summaries and covers), but it also includes some extra sketches and the first 6 pages of the new Justice League book. It shows Batman chasing a large cloaked figure across the rooftops, being pursued by police helicopters who have been ordered to take both of them down. Batman jumps the figure, who is revealed to be a large cyborg-looking thing, and then Green Lantern jumps in and saves Bats' ass. Upon seeing Bats, GL exclaims "You're REAL?".

This exchange gives some kind of idea of how the new DC will have changed. Bats is back to being a wanted vigilante, and hasn't met any of the other heroes yet. Supes has two new costumes, a more armor-like "classic" suit and cape (minus the red underpants), which I actually like, and, get this, a t-shirt (with logo) and jeans. Still with the cape. WTF?

Overall I'm interested in the relaunch. I'm looking forward to the new Aquaman, Justice League Dark, Stormwatch, and some of the other relaunches, as well as Bruce and Damian actually working together in Batman and Robin (actually exploring a real father and son crime-fighting team). However, after looking through this preview issue, there is a problem that jumps out at me.

The relaunch doesn't appear to be consistent across the board. For example, Bats is apparently back to being a mythic vigilante with at least Green Lantern not knowing who he is, probably other characters as well, but according to the previews, Damien is still his son, Bruce Wayne still created Batman Incorporated, and all the other Bat-heroes are still in their respective positions (Red Robin, Nightwing, Red Hood, Batwoman, and Batgirl (but as Barbara Gordon)). How is that supposed to work with Bats still an unknown? Also, although characters like Bats, Supes, and Wonder Woman are getting reset, apparently none of the Green Lantern characters are. The status quo at the end of "War of the Green Lanterns" still holds (or does it), with Hal stranded on Earth sans ring (but then how does he save Bats?), Sinestro now a Green Lantern, Guy and John heading the Green Lantern Corps, Kyle leading a new rainbow brigade in New Guardians, and the Red Lanterns getting their own title.

I could just be bitching about nothing (though I wish they'd let Dick stay Batman for longer). This could all get explained away in the first issues, or maybe even at the end of Flashpoint, because surely a company as big as DC wouldn't leaving such gaping holes in such a massive event.  I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I wonder if they have a Plan B if this thing categorically collapses. I mean other than bankruptcy.

I actually went to a comic book store for the first time in probably 20 years yesterday and bought the new Star Wars: Invasion 12: Revelations, Part 1 from Dark Horse.

I flipped through The New 52.  It wasn't really drawing me in or making me all that curious to find out why things were the way they were.

My guess is that none of this is meant to stick, and that DC will be reverting back to its old lineups and chronologies in a year.

I figure this is their New Coke.  It's there to make a big splash and peter out while we pine for the Coca-Cola Classic they've manipulated us into missing.

I flipped through that freebie today too. This seems like a really strange joke. I can't believe DC is really doing this. Are their sales that terrible?

From what I've seen of the relaunch, I'll probably be skipping about 98% of them. Justice League seemed like a no-brainier for me, but that 5 page promo did nothing for me. I don't really want to slog through the first year with all these "established" heroes learning all about each other all over again. Plus the art, despite me being a Jim Lee junkie back in the day, doesn't stand out to me as much as it used to. Right now I'm thinking I'll try 2 or 3 titles tops, but it'll be a game day decision.

I guess they think that if movies can reboot their characters whenever they want, DC might as well try it for themselves.

So today is the day. The final issue of Flashpoint and the first issue of Justice League, the first book of the New 52, hits shops today. I'm checking out 15 or so of the new books, hopefully this line-wide reboot is worth it.

I'm curious to see how this plays out, from a sideline perspective.  I like comics, but I don't have the time to follow all that shit.  Please do continue to share your thoughts on the reboot-that's-sort-of-not-a-reboot-but-is.

I just tried posting about this, but my post seems to have gone away. Oh well. Basically KV said what I'd said. I'll be a little more wary of trying out the new books. I've been reading the tor articles about the new titles, and not too many have been grabbing my interest.

So I caved and bought JLA #1. The guy at the counter asked if I was planning on buying all 52 titles, because apparently they have some discount deal if you do. I said I wasn't.
