Current Annoyances

I will be updating this infrequently. I will sometimes repeat myself. Feel free to add your own current annoyances.

Current Annoyances

  1. Paul Dergarabedian (The guy is fucking useless. I may create a thread to track his Captain Obvious approach to box office analysis. It bothers me that he is paid money. At the same time, though: good on you, Paul Dergarabedian. You've managed to make money for nothing. I wonder, though: does he get his chicks for free?)
  2. Dogster (Mostly it's just the users, and not the actual site. What really gets me--kinda creeps me out, actually--are the profiles written in the first person. Examples: Sheba, Smudge. Another thing is that gets me is that nine owners out of ten like to set their dog's intelligence higher than the intelligence level for the generic example of their dog's breed. Also, creepy tributes to dead dogs, such as this. Speaking of creepy devotion to one's pets, if you've never seen Gates of Heaven, you should.)
  3. My Dissertation (Speaking of which, I'd better get back to it.)
  4. Corona's apparent dislike of HTML tags for unordered lists.

Here at CA when I click on the new posts in a thread, and then it takes you to some random page in the thread, and then you have to click on the last page to get to the new posts. Yeah, I hate that.

More of Thursty's annoyances: Jack's ever-escalating, ever-more-desparate, increasingly-less-funny attempts to win "Post of the Day." It's becoming difficult to watch.

Why is my post all in bold? I hate that too!

Never mind. Goiter must be dinking around with his post because it keeps changing appearance too. Should I say it? I should. I HATE THAT!!!

You'll get there, Jack. I won't just give it to you. You'll have to earn it. I'm confident you will, though.

Glad somebody finally brought this up.

I was making up an unordered list, but this site doesn't like the code for that. It doesn't mind ordered lists, apparently.

Your text got bolded when I accidentally deleted a closing tag.

Not if you hold me to the unreasonable standards that I've requested. I've been disappointed before, Thursty: don't disappoint me again.

That's it. I'm altering the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further.

Work - the company I work for, the job I do, the people I have to deal with, the fact that if I had more business then none of this would annoy me.

School -- one of my professors doesn't allow absences. Just straight up does not allow them. I wouldn't actually mind that policy if she was a great professor who wanted to make sure everyone was serious about her class, but she's actually the worst professor I have. In general, bad professors tend to piss me off way more than they should because I feel like I'm getting a poor return on a substantial investment, but who exactly am I going to complain to?

Work -- There's this guy who comes in, we call him Heaving Guy because he stands by the water fountain and heaves for ten minutes every day without fail. He's also obsessed with our reserves director, he hits on the young girls at the computer stations, and he comes in EVERY DAY for his university-mandated free rental of headphones, calculators, internet time and our various journals. We looked him up the other day, thinking we could get rid of him for abusing university property (most of our weirdest patrons are community members who were banned from the public library), only to discover that he is visiting faculty. In Asian Studies. Which bears the question, why is he hanging around so much in the Life Sciences Library? Dr. Elder says we can't ban him unless he actually assaults somebody, but Jesus, you'd think interrogating the students for twenty-minute intervals about a library employee would be grounds for making him use any of the 14 other UT libraries, most of which orbit closer to his field of study. (In a rare victory, the night manager bitched him out after he was rude to me, but I immediately felt awful because I think he was trying, in his antisocial way, to be funny.)

Family -- My family's also coming to town to take me out to dinner for my birthday, which would be great if I got on well at all with my family. Instead of having a huge fight and estranging ourselves from one another, we're doing the WASPy big-smile-pretty-dress thing and pretending we can stand more than a few hours of each others' company. At this point I think I resent having to put on heels and entertain 50-year-olds more than I fear the inevitable emotional trauma.

In other news, everything that is going to be due before Spring Break is due Tuesday! I love undergrad!

Spammy in a pretty dress is a major distraction, but certainly not an annoyance.

I keep getting an error each time I log into CA, in place of my profile page. That annoys the hell out of me.

The fact that I managed to fix the parking sensors on my car all by myself this morning, and that by lunchtime they had gone doolally again, this similarly annoys me.

I didn't even know parking sensors existed until you posted about yours not working. Are they a standard feature on newer cars? Here's the big question: how is it you're always so quick to realize they aren't working? Do you back into other cars every time you park? (Or is there a little parking sensor sensor that lights up on your console to tell you the parking sensors are failing?)

Parking sensors could have saved my stepfather some repair bills over the years. He has the awful habit of assuming none of the cars parked in the yard ever moves an inch, and that no visitors ever park in the yard. He might as well back out of the yard blindfolded. He's smashed into cars and hit and killed some of our dogs and chickens because of this. Luckily, he's only ever done this with his truck. (Luckily for the owners of the cars he's hit, that is. The chickens and dogs he's hit and killed would have still been hit and killed, most likely.) If he were to crash into our cars with the school bus he drives, it wouldn't be pretty (not that it's ever pretty).

Also, everyone is getting a 403 or 404 message when they try to edit or view profiles. It has been reported.

Does it annoy you that it's been reported?

It annoys him that it was mentioned before anyone checked in another forum to see if it had already been reported!

On the parking sensor, there is a little light that flashes rather than just coming on when you engage reverse. It means I have to do parking the old fashioned way by actually judging distance and being aware of the size of the car. This is not a problem for me, as I have a penis.

Do you use it to determine how many centimeters separate your car from the cars on either side of it?
