Dalty's Movie Prices Round Up

Posted by Daltons chin dimple on Wednesday, May 29, 2013

So I have no idea how much things are in US or Canadian theatres, or if they vary from state to state.

Cinema tickets in the UK have been climbing steadily.

Monday was a Holiday, so it was weekend prices.

Two tickets to Star Trek were £19.50 including credit card online booking fee. This was 2D. So £9.75 each. Kids are cheaper.

The chain I was in (Cineworld) would charge £3 for 3D glasses if it was the 3D version, but you can keep them and re-use them for other 3D films. Other chains recycle their glasses so you hand them in after the show, but tickets for 3D shows are about £2-£3 more.

A huge Fanta, a bucket of sweet popcorn plus a cup of tea and a Ben & Jerry's for Mrs Dalty was about £12.

I imagine this is quite a bit more than the US and Canada?

Well, my ticket to Fast 6 was a holiday priced $10, though it would've been $7.50 for the matinee. A medium popcorn was $7. I think the 3D surcharge is in the range of $3 most places, but we don't usually sell cuppas here. Coffee can range from, oh, $3-5 depending on size/syrups and such.

Also, I hereby bless this thread as the first approved roundup spinoff. Nicely done sir.

I felt a spin off was deserved.  Also, I am interested in these things.

Most cinemas here have a coffee and hot drinks machine behind the concessions stand. However I get the impression that Mrs Dalty is the ONLY person who ever orders tea at the movies.  At least judging on the looks I get!

Whats the exchange rate these days?  $1.6 dollars to £1 ish?

One of the other funky things they have started doing at Odeon cinemas here, our biggest chain, is assigned Parent & Baby/Toddler screenings.  These are usually early in the day and you know it will be a sea of strollers and crying kids with nappy changes and breast feeding + lots of moving clientele for toilet breaks. But it allows parents to go see movies without needing a sitter.  They also turn the booming sound down a bit.

if you go to one of these as a non-parent then you know what you are signing up for.

They also don't dim the lights all the way.

Dunno, didn't notice when I went to one but you are probably right.

So how does MO compare?

The prices you're posting aren't rounding up. Your thread's title suggested they would.

I think the average ticket price for an evening show in 2D is in the $10.00 range. It's closer to $12.50 for 3D. It's even more if you do IMAX.

A small soda, of course, will cost you $38.00.

I generally avoid 3D conversions on principle.  But there were shots in STITD that made me wish I was seeing it in 3D.  The 'jump to warp' effects chief among them.  Plus a particular incident that happens whilst at warp.

So I always try and go 2D, but our cinema prices seem so high it doesn't matter.

It matters when you're fuckin' poor, Moneybags. A dollar can make a world of difference.

It matters whenever.  If a trip for two in 3D, including snacks and parking and petrol etc is more than £40.... and they wonder why admissions are falling.

Especially when 4 months later you can OWN the BluRay and enjoy it with a bottle of wine etc for the same price, if not less.

How much do BluRays/DVDs cost there, Dalty? Are they actually in the 40 quid range for say, Fast & Furious 6, or the major blockbusters of that variety? We seem similar enough on theater prices, but if I'm understanding you correctly, Discs are MUCH more expensive there than here.

It's a form of currency that looks identical to the British pound and is recognized by the British government to be of equal worth.

Discs are insanely pricey in Britain. They were when I went, anyway. I had just come from Germany, where they were comparable in price to US DVDs. (That's the new stuff. Non new releases in Germany are pretty cheap.)

Back in the Detroit area, we could go to an afternoon matinee for $5 or $6 a ticket. Concessions were crazy, of course, $4 for a small, $3 for a bottle of water. Here in Chicago it's about $10 a ticket, maybe $7.50 for a matinee, and add $2 or $3 for 3D (which is why we avoid it, besides it's almost never worth it).

We did get Monday special price tix at the art theatre this week, $5 a pop. Then we promptly spent another $10 on popcorn and drinks.

I would order tea (and have) but too often it ends up tasting like coffee because they use the same machine.

In the UK a DVD is about £8-£10.  A BluRay is about £13 up to £18 ish for a 3D/Triple Play latest release.

I think DVDs on UK amazon are wonderfully priced, and some of them (like the Scott Pilgrim DVD) offer bonus features that aren't on the American DVDs (or are only on the American Blu-Ray), so I occasionally order DVDs from there (when we have money) - since we don't live in Europe, we don't have to pay the VAT, and the discount from that tends to offset the shipping.

It also helps that UK amazon has decent international shipping prices, unlike the German incarnation.

I assume you guys have a region 2 DVD player leftover from your time in Germany, Jubbers? Or did they do away with region codes while I wasn't looking? Because if THAT'S the case, I've got some serious importing to do.

We have a player that shows multiple regions.

Also, depending on your hardware and/or OS, there's a good chance the VLC Player on your computer will play regions other than Region 1.

We have a cheap iView 102DV player I bought a couple of years ago ($30?) - I just looked it up on amazon, and the new version allows you to plug in a USB thumb drive. Now I wish we had that one.
