Dead Island

Has anyone else started playing it?

I'm playing on the PC.

I'm not really hooked on the game yet. It definitely feels like you're on a big island. It's pretty. The voice acting is pretty good in general as well.

So far, I've managed to get everyone to the lifeguard station and got that dude the spare parts he needed to repair the truck. Now I have to kill time until he fixes it. He's just standing around, though, looking like a dick. FUCKING FIX THE TRUCK! See, I need the truck so I can go to the gas station and get some gas to burn the bodies that are starting to stink and attract the zombies. Also, the dude whose idea it was won't leave me alone about it. I just want to tell him to bitch at the dickwad who's not fixing the truck.

So I've started wandering around, and I found two chicks in a bungalow. One wants water. i'd already collected two or three bottles. I gave them to her, and she's still bitching about how she's going to die with no water. Listen, you whore, go back to the lifeguard station. There's a fucking soda machine! It's about a 30 second walk, and I'll fucking go with you if you would move.

The other chick is even worse. She looks like she's in her 20s, and she wants me to go find her fucking teddy bear. WHAT.THE.FUCK?!

Finally, my last gripe about the game, and this one has to do with their upgrade/weapon repair mechanics. I get the real world reason for it, but in-game, it makes no sense that you need to "buy" weapons you find on the ground with money. Nor does it really make sense that you'd need to pay to repair weapons. The whole island is bugfuck crazy and everything abandoned. Why the hell am I paying for shit?

Maybe I should stop accepting quests and just be an asshole and get everyone killed. It's kind of what I wanna do. Oh, I'm playing the douchebag football player, btw.

Jakester, you do know we have a whole forum dedicated to video games, don't you?

I think we may also have a whole forum dedicated to porn, too. Wait, that's the lounge. Carry on then.

Yeah, but nothing gets posted elsewhere any more, so if you want anybody to see your post, it must go in the Lounge.

As for Dead Island, I think the game looks interesting, but only $20 worth of interesting for me.  I might pick it up in the future, especially if I can find somebody to play co-op with.

I've been having a blast with the new Deus Ex game recently. Apart from a couple of things that bugged me (mostly a couple of annoying boss fights), the vast majority of the game was an absolute blast to play.

Was Dead Island based on Lost?

Yes, Omi, I know we have a video game forum, but as Strider mentioned, we just seem to only post in the Lounge.

Strider, I absolutely loved Deus Ex when it came out. It was very innovative and engrossing. I'll probably get around to the new one after I finish Arkham City. I'm dropping everything and playing that bitch when it comes out.

$20 worth of interesting sounds about right for Dead Island based on what I've played so far. Given that the announcement trailer was so riveting, I was expecting something (I'm not sure what) more.

Doc, in Dead Island, you play as one of four characters who is on an island resort somewhere near AUS/NZ and wakes up one day to find the zombie apocalypse in full swing. The dude I picked is a douchebaggy washed-up football player. I get the impression that the rest of the choices are d-bags in their own way.

ah the old Catch-22. "I'm not going to post in other forums because no one posts in other forums" :)

Never really got into Zombie games. I got Dead Rising when I first bought my Xbox, played about 5 minutes of it, and never got back into it.

I think people might post in the other forums if you could tell from the front page of the forums whether or not there were new posts in the forums. We had several different forums at Excelsior, and even though we had roughly the same amount of posters there as here, most of the forums got used. But there when you went to the front page, there was a light next to each forum that had new posts. Here there's a date, which doesn't stand out, and the times are wonky anyway, and a current date doesn't even mean there's a new post there. It usually means Pat's written an article on the front page that relates to that forum. But of course I don't even go to the main forum page anymore. I go straight to the lounge, because that's where everybody hangs out. Then I go to the front page of Corona to see if there's any new stories/scoops.

Bingo. I have no problem posting in other forums, but too often things didn't get read when I would. Although maybe they did get read and what I said just wasn't interesting. If that's true, then people only care when I make penis jokes.

It's fine with people posting about games in the Lounge. We do need more consistent traffic before it feels like the posts you make in the other sections will be read by more people.

I was thinking of getting this game but then I've read some negative reviews of it saying that the AI is weak and the game doesn't live up to the potential seen in the trailer.

No matter where you go, there you are.

I'm seriously behind on my video games. I'm just now getting into Fallout 3... and I only get about one or two hours a day to play it. At the pace that I usually play RPGs I might get done with it about this time next year.

It's not great, the AI. Granted, they're zombies, and don't have to be too smart, but I can't get why some of them are using weapons. Also some don't animate until you get close, which is fine and creepy, but when I know one is going to reanimate, and I'm getting close enough to hit it, sometimes it goes from laying face down to standing (and beating my ass) before I can get a swing off.
Also, I found a chick who was hiding from the zombies in a small room in a bungalow, and there was a zombie IN THERE WITH HER!
I've read some people complain that the fighting is simply "mash buttons," but it's no more that than Arkham Asylum. You can move in and out of range and beat one zombie down to give yourself some time to take out another while the first recovers. You can have some strategy, so I don't really have a problem with the combat system.
But there are a lot of technical problems. And the money system is fundamentally flawed. Additionally, requiring players to achieve a certain minimum level before being about to use certain found weapons is stupid. I found a knife that I can't use 'til level 14. It's A KNIFE! It's not like I need small arms training to use a knife.

mashing on the buttons, but it won't serve you very well. The combat works much better when you get into a good rhythm and mix up your moves a lot. In fact, just add in a "note highway", and it'd be Guitar Hero: Batman Edition.

Yeah, the Arkham games could be construed as button mashers in combat as well, but it sure as heck doesn't feel like it. There's something elegant about punching w/ LMOUSE and then hitting it again to do a back handspring across the room to kick some thug in the jaw, as opposed to hitting u-d-u-d-l-r-l-x+y.

Dead Island is getting a bit more interesting, but I found another lame quest. Some chick wants me to get her more champagne so she can keep partying. I'd love to be able to attack the NPCs.

I read on Penny Arcade yesterday that the developer apparently released a patch which has made the game even more unplayable (at least in multiplayer) than it already was.

I know Dead Island has had a few patches for the PC already as well. Damn buggy game.

I play City of Heroes for my multiplayer fix. Incidentally, CoH goes to a hybrid free to play/pay model soon (the VIP headstart opens today). If anyone wants to give it a go. It's easily the best superhero MMO out, and although it's easy to go all hardcore, you don't really need to grind to build out a good toon.

It was clear to me, Mal. Or should I go all Goiter (The Swolloe Goi...) and call you Mal Shot First all the time?

You don't really have to answer that, because I'm not calling you "Mal Shot First" all the time.
