Doctor Who: The End of Time (SPOILERS)

Posted by KingVoyeur on Wednesday, December 30, 2009

Thoughts?

I have to say, when the Master turned every human on Earth into himself, I was kind of 'meh', but then when Timothy Dalton showed up with all of the Time Lords I was like "Holy Shit!!!!" (even though for some reason I kind of saw that coming when Dalton was revealed earlier in the episode). Still, it was an awesome "Oh Shit!" moment. Waiting for Part 2!

Oh, and did anyone else think Iron Man when the Master took off using the electricity from his hands? Same damn pose as Iron Man!

Part one underwhelmed me, though there were some good bits. I liked The Doctor's talk with Wilf at the diner. Someone speculated that Wilf was a Time Lord hiding as a human, but I think we've done that enough already. I thought what the Master did was pretty amusing. I'm not sure what the point of it was, but I'm not sure he's thinking rationally.
Having the Time Lords return just seems so far out of left field, that it seems like it will take a long time to explain. Also, what's with capturing all of that spittle on film? Weird.

I actually thought of Infamous, the PS3 game, but Iron Man is another good comparison. I'm sure we could come up with a few others as well.

Same here....I loved the parts with Wilf, especially the early scene in the bus and the one with Tennant in the restaurant (or perhaps a pub...I wasn't sure). I also liked the little bits with Donna: "Are you shouting at thin air!?" Despite its cheesiness (or perhaps because of it), I loved the "Master race" line. The "cactus" aliens were fun as well. I can't wait for the second part, and I hope that both Donna and Timothy Dalton's character get a lot more screen time.

Shimmer!

Hmm...the more I think about it, the more I see Wilf being a Time Lord as a possibility. It would explain a lot about why Donna's "so important." But what about her mum? She'd be more Time Lord than Donna. Ultimately, I don't think it's a great story choice, but I think it's one RTD might make.

Thank Zarquon RTD didn't do it (RE: Wilf & Donna). But really, the whole episode just seemed to be scenes sort of strung together with the loosest of cohesion. The story wasn't very tight at all. Almost every moment seemed forced, excepting the last half hour or so. That was pretty good and more or less made up the the rest.
Here's a quick summary -- RTD did a great job with the characters. The story was kind of lame (sort of like the last bit of BSG).

Part 2 was definitely better than part 1. I'm torn on it though. The overall plotting was terrible and incoherent, but the performances and some of the lines were brilliant. Cribbins and Tennant were great together again, and even John Simm had some good moments as the Master. Hell, Matt Smith's few seconds at the end were damned good as well. It's just too bad that these guys didn't have a better script to work with. Still Tennant was able to make his sendoff a good one by sheer force of will.

Thank goodness that Steven Moffat is now taking over the show. RTD has done some great things for the Doctor, but I think he's gotten a bit tired. I can't wait to see what sorts of things Moffat has up his sleeve for the show.

I agree, part 2 was better. As a whole it wasn't fantastic, but it did have some great moments. I was really looking forward to what this whole "End of Time" thing was, but it was only mentioned as a last resort for the Time Lords and never materialized as a threat.

You know, I'm actually disappointed the Time Lords didn't really return. I thought that would've been a great game-changer for the way the Doctor did business, with the rest of his race back and always looking over his shoulder. Now even the Master's gone. Oh well. Excited about Moffat taking over, and I'm even looking forward to how Matt Smith does things.

BTW, didn't The Doctor shake radiation out of his foot some time ago? I suppose there's something to be said for how he went out -- making it a choice to sacrifice himself for an old man, but it was really shoehorned in. *sigh*

I think that the last time the Doctor squared off against The Master, there was too much going on, too many characters to keep track of and it got confusing for a guy like me that Likes the show but doesnt have a vested history in the entire Dr Who Universe.

this time around though, there was considerably less characters to worry about, the time Lords came back briefly and as with everything else on this crazy show, now that Timothy Dalton is cast as the lead Time Lord, I'm sure it's not the last time we've seen him or The Master.

Dead characters always have a way of popping up for the season finale or season openers, its just good television... Dalton will be back.

who was the lady on the TV that was giving secret orders to Wilf? Was she Dr Who's mother?

nice touch there at the end with the Torchwood crew too... I like me some cameos.

As I posted on the main page, fair play to RTD for resurrecting Who, but it is time for him to go. The finale showed an example of every single bad aspect of RTD's writing and involvement.

1) Promising premise ruined by camp. CHECK
2) Eye wateringly over the top at times. CHECK
3) Big something appearing in the sky over Earth yet again. CHECK
4) Convoluted excuse to revisit/reunite past assistants. CHECK
5) Shoe-horned in gay reference for no reason whatsoever other than to say "I'm here, I'm queer and I'm writing Doctor Who! Get used to it!". CHECK
6) Completely non-sensical plot with sheer pace used to attempt to steam roller over gaping plot holes and total lack of story cohesion. CHECK
7) Clearly trying to introduce new points of Time Lord lore or canon but not feeling like it is important to give detail on any of these new developments, just mention them in passing and they shall become part of the mythology. CHECK

Basically it was saved by David Tennant's awesomeness in the role. His last performance against Wilf right at the end, and his last line, were amazing.
Matt Smith has big shoes to fill, but judging from the trailer he looks up to the job!

After a Best Supporting Actress nomination, she is lost to Who forever. There goes the chances of seeing Sally Sparrow again.

Watching 'Being Human' last night I thought that it would be nice to see the girl who plays Annie in that given a chance at the Tardis.
