'Game of Thrones' series Greenlighted

Posted by Jack S. Pharaoh on Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Holy fuck, yes. I know this means nothing to almost everyone here, but I've been waiting for this since the book series was first optioned three years ago. They even released the first production still, a shot apparently from the prologue of the book. So, yes, people, deal with me starting random threads and forcing irrelevant knowledge upon you. This is how Jack does business, aggresively and in a pompous third-person. Pray I never decide to educate the lot of you about pregnancy.

This post at Winter-is-Coming details how HBO has updated their recently launched website themaesterspath.com.  According to WiC, there is one challenge available on the site, and winning the challenge gives some kind of reward that people are geeking out over.  From what people have written, I guess it's a video.  I won't be able to check it out until after work.  :(

I guess I'm not sure what is required to play the game, since I haven't gone to the site yet, but the symbols from scrolls in a gift box recently sent to critics and such might be part of it.  They can be found here.

Someone has posted the reward video at youtube. ^^

In books series news, Martin recently posted about some more work completed on the final chapters of 'A Dance with Dragons'. While I'm always glad to hear news of progress, I can barely raise an eyebrow anymore. Every new calendar year that arrives makes it seem more and more impossible that the book can ever be finished. I know this is irrational, and as long as he keeps writing he should theoretically keep getting closer to the end. It's like that paradox about throwing the apple at the tree, and if you divide the space between the apple and the tree by half, and then half again, and then half again, ad infinitum, the apple never reaches the tree. Of course, I don't mean to be too skeptical: I can't stand the GRRM haters, and don't want to appear to be one of them. I mean, I expect the book to be finished some day, it's just that when that moment arrives it will be about as shocking as if Armageddon comes.

Musil wrote and wrote, but he never finished Man Without Qualities.  Then one day he died in the middle of his morning exercises.

April 18th in the UK on the same channel as Boardwalk Empire.  One day after the US apparently.

I will be on a Singapore Airlines flight about the time it premieres so I must, must, must, must set my Sky box for this before I go or I will never manage to catch up.  Somebody remind me before I go????

Is now enough advance notice?

The EPG only works 8 days in advance.  I can, however, set it to record at home from my iPhone.

Of course you can.  Can you also launch missles from your iPhone?

I could, but the sliding door on my volcano-sub-base-missile-silo is playing up, and there isn't an app for that yet.

The Sky+ app is pretty damn cool though.  Get a full representation of the EPG on your iPhone and if you are out and about when you realise you have forgot to record something, just use it exactly the same way as the normal EPG and as long as your Sky+ box is connected to the phone line and there is at least about 30 mins to go until the show starts, you can set the box on the move.  It has saved me from televisual oblivion a few times.

And those shows you were able to record while you were out and about are still sitting unwatched on your Skybox, aren't they?

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD. GRRM AND HIS PUBLISHER ANNOUNCE PUBLICATION DATE FOR ADWD: JULY 12, 2011.  Wow, that's kind of anticlimactic after I wrote just 16 hours ago that the book seemed unfinishable (though, to be fair, Martin claims it's still not finished, but very, very close).

Also, EW provides an exclusive new trailer for the TV show.

There's no way it'll get published on that date. That's only 4 months away! It wouldn't get published that fast if he handed over the finished manuscript today. Why doesn't he just do the right thing and say it'll be published by the end of the year? (which it won't)

Well, some people with access to the publishers have claimed for some time that they can do a three month turnaround, in part because GRRM's manuscripts are very clean and don't require a lot of editing, and also because I think they've been editing the book as he goes. I never really cared much about this speculation, because it seemed immaterial as long as the book wasn't done. I always told myself that if I could just know that the book would be done, I would hardly care how long it took to arrive, but I knew I'd feel differently once it was actually announced. I really thought that knowing the book would be coming out would be a more magical feeling that it seems right now. Maybe it's just because I only got two hours of sleep last night. The times I would usually get most excited about the book would be when I'd re-read the last one and get to the end, because the end has so many teases. Also, when I'd read some of the more interesting fan theories about what stuff means, or what might happen, or who Cold Hands might be, or whether or not Tyrion is the son of Aerys II, or whether Baby Aegon is still alive (popular candidates for him were Edric Dayne (I think) and Aurane Waters). It's funny to think how much one book can change the series: I mean, if it were average size, it would consist of 20% of the pages published so far, but it's going to be well above average size, so I'm guessing more like 22.5%.

Also, to carry on with some other thoughts, this book is sort of special in some ways: it's the longest I've had to wait for a book in the series, since I finished reading the first three books in the summer of '03, less than 2 1/2 years before the release of the fourth book in November 2005. Then there was the anticlimax of finding out the last book didn't really get "finished" in the same sense, since GRRM ended up splitting it in half (sort of; I think the story goes that he published half of what he thought it would've been when it would've ultimately been finished, but he'd only been 3/4 done with that, so he published something like 2/3 of the material he had written at that time). Then of course, the last book ended up not including a number of regular characters because of the split, so book five will be see the return of characters not to appear in a full-length book since the release of 'A Storm of Swords' all the way back in 2000. That's another thing that would get me excited about the book: reading some of GRRM's sample chapters for these long-absent characters. Those chapters were excellent.

I am getting better. I am now up to date completely with Blue Bloods. I am only 1 week behind on Boardwalk Empire and 2 weeks behind on True Blood. 1 week back on Being Human. Up to date on Big Bang Theory mainly because it's a 20 minute filler (f-fwd the adverts etc.) that can be crammed in around other stuff.

I am an entire season behind with Gossip Girl and don't even know how Ugly Betty finished yet. I am not concerned in the slightest about either of these things.

1 week behind on Boardwalk Empire based on what airing schedule?  Have all 12 episodes not aired yet in the UK?  I can't wait for season 2!

We are up to episode 6 now.  I am on episode 4 or 5.  Episode 7 gets aired tonight.

Most shows we get a while behind the US, like True Blood where S3 will be finishing over here about a month before S4 starts in the US.  Others are just behind, like Game of Thrones will be (24hrs).  I think Walking Dead was only a day or two as well.

Freakily, we used to get BSG just before the US sometimes, and just behind other times.  I think Sky co-produced it or something.

Spoilers are a b*tch!  I think the delay is getting less in an effort to cut down on cross-Atlantic show piracy.

Damn that sucks.  You could always download, if you have the time.  They used to air Spooks here in the US, but long after it aired in the UK.  Now, you are lucky to find it anywhere, so I have had to resort to downloads to be able to watch it.  I won't spoil Boardwalk Empire for you, except to tell you that you won't be disappointed.  Awesome season!

I do commend BBCAmerica for getting Doctor Who on Christmas night.  That was fantastic.  I did, nevertheless, get a torrent download from the UK showing as soon as it was available, but I watched the BBCA showing w/ the family.
