'Game of Thrones' series Greenlighted

Posted by Jack S. Pharaoh on Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Holy fuck, yes. I know this means nothing to almost everyone here, but I've been waiting for this since the book series was first optioned three years ago. They even released the first production still, a shot apparently from the prologue of the book. So, yes, people, deal with me starting random threads and forcing irrelevant knowledge upon you. This is how Jack does business, aggresively and in a pompous third-person. Pray I never decide to educate the lot of you about pregnancy.

HBO has announced that there will be a fifteen minute preview of the first episode on April 3rd; that's only two weeks before the premiere. I already feel like I'm watching too much stuff before the show even airs, but I don't know if I'll be able to resist it. It will be made available online by HBO (not that anything would've stopped it from showing up online).

I like this new trailer quite a bit: that first shot of the Wall is pretty cool, and I wonder if those characters riding out from it are the Night's Watch members from the prologue? We don't see them setting out from the Wall in the book, but I can see why in the show they might want to establish the Wall in the first episode, cause it's pretty cool looking, and they can make the connection for new viewers between it and the Night's Watch. The clips in this trailer seem to be mostly from the first half of the book, as far as I can identify them. They had a couple of shots from the Tourney of the Hand, which they've been using in a lot of trailers, and that takes place over two episodes, as far as I know, and I think it's going to be episodes 4 & 5 (either that or 3 & 4). More and more, I think NCW is going to own the role of Jaime: too bad Jaime isn't in the first two books all that much (in the second book he appears in only one chapter); they'll probably find reasons for him to appear onscreen a little more than he did on the page, though. Even with just these short clips, I can recognize some small changes to the story, like King Robert claiming that if the Dothraki invade, they won't be able to stop them: in the books he was worried about the idea of them possibly invading, or causing some kind of conflict, but the Westerosi scoffed at the Dothraki as backward savages.

According to HBO's schedule guide, which now goes just far enough into the future to reach the first episode, that episode is called 'Winter is Coming' and lasts 62 minutes. Sweet.

Fuck, I don't even know what day of the week April 17th is on!

Lessee... today's the 6th, carry the 1, ah of course, Sunday! The shows are always on Sunday. See, if I had premium cable channels, I would've known that!

Solved, and love the reward! Honestly though, I didn't really get this puzzle. Guess I'm not a big enough fan...

Here's the reward video from the last puzzle:

Here's the first book with the new tie-in cover:

Here are some screencaps from one of the recent trailers when aired on HBO, where it apparently contained some alternate clips:

Would it be better if he was on a porcelain one instead?

Did you mean to write "were" instead of "was"? I suppose it all depends on whether you meant to communicate formality or informality. It should be understood you're writing in the subjunctive, whatever the case. If you are worried it is unclear, you could always go with "were."

So we don't have time for a biblical flood, then?

No, but there's still time for Adam to fall in love with the project and kill it within 2 episodes!

Maybe if we stop talking about it, he'll never actually watch it. I don't think he's caught wind of it yet.

No, because we haven't been talking about it at all, have we?

I don't think he's posted in this thread, though. We could bury this thread by posting like lunatics in all the other threads. Unfortunately we won't be able to remind Dalty to set his Sky box unless we use some kind of code. For instance: Instead of a Game of Thrones, we could call it A Rain of Clones.

No, that would be risky. If he's not interested in it now, changing the name might make him curious. He'd look at the thread, and then BAM! No more GoT. It might even destroy HBO as we know it.

Fine, just tell him Jim Belushi's in it. That will give it the anti-Adam curse, making it live on longer than anyone ever wanted it to.

HBO released this poster; same image as the recent book cover, but includes the tagline "You win or you die," which had been a popular choice with fans, though I think it sits a little odd.  "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die," seems like it would've been better, but that probably seemed repetitive of the title.  Anyway, some fan noticed that the crow has an eye on its forehead, making it the three-eyed crow from Bran's dreams/nightmares.

If Goiter encourages it, I discourage it.
