'Game of Thrones' series Greenlighted

Posted by Jack S. Pharaoh on Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Holy fuck, yes. I know this means nothing to almost everyone here, but I've been waiting for this since the book series was first optioned three years ago. They even released the first production still, a shot apparently from the prologue of the book. So, yes, people, deal with me starting random threads and forcing irrelevant knowledge upon you. This is how Jack does business, aggresively and in a pompous third-person. Pray I never decide to educate the lot of you about pregnancy.

Repeating the secretaries' gossip?  A nice example you're setting.  No wonder Dalty acts like he does.  Now I see where he gets it.

Our secretaries were too busy misfiling important papers and calling up their mothers during work hours to gossip.

I saw our principal slap our Spanish teacher's ass, once.  He would also drop by her class at all hours of the day to flirt with her in front of her students.  We began to wonder just how much time he actually spent principaling.

They were both married to other people.  Her oldest daughter was in the grade below mine, and was ashamed.  I couldn't get her to admit she was ashamed, but I could see it in her tears.

Her oldest daughter was sort of a bitch.  Every cheerleader had been assigned a handful of football players.  They were supposed to decorate our lockers and put bags of candy in them.  They were also supposed to give us "Spirit Badges" and various other things.  (I went to a very forward thinking, non-sexist sort of school.  All girls were required to take two years of Home Economics and all boys were required to take two years of Agriculture classes.  You couldn't opt out of one and take the other.  Your gender dictated your schedule.)  I never got any of that stuff, despite the fact that the other football players to whom she had been assigned got their stuff.

I was joking about trying to get her to admit to being ashamed, mind you.  To my knowledge, she had no reason to pass me over.   Her mother disliked me intensely, but I never could figure out why.  I guess I was a smart ass goof whose Spanish wound up being superior to hers (the mother's, I mean; her Spanish was atrocious.   She would try to find creative ways to mark my test grades down to a 99 or 98, despite being a lax grader when it came to other students' tests), but it's not like I rubbed her face in it.

I don't see why her mother's dislike of me would filter on down to her daughter.  For that to happen, she'd have to have talked to her daughter about me.  I wasn't so full of myself as to assume I was a topic of conversation in their home.

Anyway, my mother, who was a special education teacher in my school at the time, complained about me not getting my candy to the cheerleader sponsor.  Thanks, Mom.  I'm sure that helped them come to like me, more.  A new cheerleader was assigned to me just days before the season ended.

I'm trying to remember if all this happened before or after I was crowned "Mr. Desperate" during a pep rally.  I think it must have happened after, because I think it happened during the playoff season of my senior year.  The Mr. Desperate coronation (or, more accurately, sashing) happened during the regular season.

But that's another story.

I just reached a little past the halfway-point in "Storm of Swords" and the incident at the Twins. GODDAMNIT GRRM!

It's no coincidence "GRRM" is so close to "GRRR."

I'm not there yet.  Dany recently "sold" her dragon, and Sansa just wed.

She didn't really sell her dragon.  It was one of those "buyer beware" type situations.

I honestly wanted to throw the book across the room and stop reading. Joffrey's wedding feast didn't even make up for it, nor did Dany's surprise protector.

Sounds like he kills somebody he spent time trying to convince you to invest in, emotionally.  I hear that's a thing he does.  Like Joss Whedon, but more often.

Ok, just finished Storm of Swords. Jeebus a lot of shit goes down in this book. Probably my favorite so far. And that reveal at the very end of the epilogue, holy shit!

Yeah, that's a pretty common reaction. I remember the day I read that part: it was a Sunday, and I had been reading nearly all day. The book had so many storylines going on that I looked ahead to see it was going to take something like 75 pages to get back to the storyline I wanted (which I think was the storyline in question). When I got there, the chapter just kept going on like nothing was going to happen, convincing me that it was all going to be all right, even though my stomach had been in knots. Then all the shit went down in like the last two pages of the chapter; I read those pages so fast, I kept going back over sentences and paragraphs to see if I really understood everything that was happening. I was stunned. I set the book down, wondering if there was any point in continuing reading, and walked around for a bit, feeling unsteady. I genuinely wondered how there could possibly be several hundred pages left in the book; it seemed like the book, and the series, should've been over at that point. I had to sit down again and read the next chapter, though, because it was a related storyline. After that one, I was done for the day.

Does "A Feast For Crows" pull any shit like SoS did? I don't want spoilers, but a little warning would be nice. Maybe it's just because a lot happens all at once in SoS (at least in the second half) that you're kind of left breathless.

Well, a lot of people complained about 'A Feast for Crows' (and haven't stopped complaining, in some cases), but it was because major characters didn't appear, they felt nothing happened, they felt the story was being expanded in locations and characters that weren't necessary/interesting.  It's pretty much the opposite of ASoS.

Ahhh....the "I'm going to repeatedly kick GRRM in the crotch until he bleeds to death out his ears" chapter.

For the uninitiated (i.e. Jakester), please continue reading at your regular pace. Nothing disturbing lies ahead. Just continue reading as if there's not a care in the world...

I did.  It could have been MORE wrong.  In fact, I was expecting something more horrible than that, but it was still pretty damn wrong.
