'Game of Thrones' series Greenlighted

Posted by Jack S. Pharaoh on Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Holy fuck, yes. I know this means nothing to almost everyone here, but I've been waiting for this since the book series was first optioned three years ago. They even released the first production still, a shot apparently from the prologue of the book. So, yes, people, deal with me starting random threads and forcing irrelevant knowledge upon you. This is how Jack does business, aggresively and in a pompous third-person. Pray I never decide to educate the lot of you about pregnancy.

Jakester, if it helps any, you got smooth sailing for the rest of the book. It's all rose petals and sunshine from here on out. Nothing remotely crazy at all. Just stroll blindly forward with no trepidation or walls of defense or anything. You are safe and secure.

Yup. In fact, everyone makes peace, and the rest of the books are just giant orgies of celebration.

The cameo by Horso is mercifully short.

GRRM threw in Horso's death to appease all the fans who were tired of people they liked getting killed.

Just thought I'd point out that I'm not the one responsible for bringing Horso to this particular party.

Jack has non-Game of Thrones blinders on, anyway.  If I were still doing the Bannies, I'd nominate this thread for the "On Topic Award."

This reminds me I need to check out the Sky planner functionality on the Sky website to see if I can set this (and Doctor Who) to record whilst I am away.  If I miss this (and Doctor Who), I might cry.

Still no critic reviews for GoT, even though screeners went out recently (critics got first six episodes, AFAIK).  A few have tweeted that they liked the first two eps, and Jace Lacob of Televisionary, the critic who apparently has enough connections that he was able to see the original pilot, has been tweeting like mad the last couple of days as he watches the eps, and he seems to really dig it.  He also claims he wife is digging it, and that while they both liked the original pilot, they love the new one.  Eric something-or-other (Goldman, maybe?) of IGN also claimed that he watched the first two eps with his wife, and she now won't allow him to watch any more without her.  I'm curious about reactions by people who haven't read the books; I was afraid they would find the early episodes completely confusing.  Of course, these chicks were both watching the show with someone who could answer any questions they had.  I'm definitely curious to see what any reviewers who haven't read the books think.  I know Alan Sepinwall hasn't read them, though he had considered it, but he decided to give a "unfamiliar with the source material" take on the show.  I was afraid it would come across like 'Gosford Park' with swords (and more killing), but so far so good.

Finished A Storm of Swords.  We got some awesome after all that craziness.  I'm sure GRRM fucks everyone over in the next book, though.

Only the fans. I kid of course: I hate the haters, but sometimes I like to impersonate them for kicks.

Here GRRM lists his top 10 sci-fi films, with a few more thrown in for honorable mention.

Up until this point, I thought Grrm was a character in the books.

Given that crows eat the dead, I'm expecting a high body count in this book.

Also, this story's gonna take 7 books?!  Dude's a wordy prick, ain't he?

Next book is the longest book yet in the series, and it still ain't finished.

Well, the title is a metaphor for a battlefield after a battle, and how the crows come to pick the flesh off the dead, and similarly how new people will fill the power vacuum. The battles were in the third book; the fourth sees more of a settling down, people trying to find a new equilibrium. There aren't really strong leaders in the right positions for this to happen, though.

Another review, this one from The Hollywood Reporter.  Seems to like it.

Tim Goodman wrote:

It’s difficult to single out the most accomplished parts of Thrones. The ambition is immense, the fantasy world exceptionally well-conceived, the writing and acting elevating the entire series beyond contemporaries like The Borgias and Camelot, and the visual appeal continues to surprise with each episode.
What we have here is the successful pairing of an acclaimed collection of fantasy books with a television series that illuminates and expands what’s on the page.
Worth the wait? Absolutely. And even if you have no idea what all the fuss is about, you should get in from the start absorb Martin’s fantastical tale.

HBO previewed an excerpt of episode one today. I liked it. I liked it a lot. It's a little bizarre for me to watch: things move so briskly, yet it feels like they hardly cover any ground before the preview is over. I didn't really mind any of the differences from the book (though that won't last for long). Unfortunately, right now it's only available via HBO's video player, but it'll be on youtube before long.

I wish they'd spent more of those fourteen minutes talking about how important food is, and how it sets the stage for Martin's fantasy world.
