'Game of Thrones' series Greenlighted

Posted by Jack S. Pharaoh on Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Holy fuck, yes. I know this means nothing to almost everyone here, but I've been waiting for this since the book series was first optioned three years ago. They even released the first production still, a shot apparently from the prologue of the book. So, yes, people, deal with me starting random threads and forcing irrelevant knowledge upon you. This is how Jack does business, aggresively and in a pompous third-person. Pray I never decide to educate the lot of you about pregnancy.

Since I bumped this thread and everything, and since the books' author made an interesting comment about the casting process, I'll go ahead and keep posting. In a post on his blog, my man George commented, in the midst of many other things such as how much he enjoyed the book and movie 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and how he enjoys the show 'Deadliest Warrior', about the casting process:

George R.R. Martin wrote:

Yes, casting is on-going for the HBO series, so I've been seeing a lot of tapes. No, I won't say who, but it's been fun. Some actors are household names who would be recognized by any film or television fan, some are veteran character actors, some are brilliant young newcomers. A wealth of choices. There are a lot of fine actors out there. On the other hand, some of these roles are very challenging, to say the least. (No, there are no obscure hints there). Parts are being cast in roughly the order they will appear in the show, so right now we're mostly concerned with filling parts for the pilot reshoots and episode two. Characters like Lord Tywin (who does not appear until my episode, episode eight) and Shae are not going to be cast until much later in the process. It's not always going to be the most familiar names who get the roles, either. And to all the dreamers and aspiring actors out there, let me say this -- PLEASE stop sending me your photographs and resumes, I am not the way to get a part on the series. You need to go through our casting director, not through me.

This post is both exciting, aggravating and informative. The aggravating, and almost unbelievable, part is that they're not past casting for the pilot (the fucking pilot which they already filmed six months ago!) and episode two! For months up until the greenlight, fans, such as myself, were abuzz with rumors that the producers had kept some of the actors from the first round of auditions in mind, as well as other actors whom they liked, and would be ready to go with casting once the greenlight came. I was ready to hear casting news within the first two weeks after the show got the go-ahead. Here we are, two months later, and they're casting for episode two!

I read some of the fan comments at the Winter-is-Coming blog, and I'm sometimes amazed, sometimes appalled, and sometimes delighted by some of the stupidity there. Someone commented that it made sense to cast in order of episode, since many TV shows would do that. While he/she is correct that many shows do that, those are mostly going to be network shows, which continuously write and produce episodes during a season, at the same time that other episodes from that season are already airing or have already aired. Most shows also follow a core group of characters and have guest stars come and go. Cable shows are different, in that many of them film entire seasons before going to air (and, as far as I know, every HBO series follows this format). Couple that with 'Game of Thrones' being like no show that I've ever heard of, where it is more like a mini-series that will (unless cancelled) span several seasons, and that it will, theoretically, follow a pre-written storyline. Casting this show in order of character appearance seems to make about as much sense as casting a movie in order of character appearance. I don't get it, unless the casting process is going to continue as the season is being filmed (and with filming less than two months away (that's what we've been told, anyway), maybe that could actually happen).

The other informative part of George's post is that Tywin will first appear in episode eight, and that Shae will be in the show and apparently in season one. There's been much speculation by the fans as to which characters will be cut, and she has been guessed by some.

I check every day for 'Game of Thrones' news, and usually there ain't much. Mostly it's that some fan scouring twitter discovered an actor tweeted that they'd auditioned (or, as happened recently, somebody tweeted that their friend would be directing two episodes). But sometimes you get something exciting out of the blue: today is the premiere of 'True Blood' season 3 at 9 PM EST, and HBO has tweeted this:

HBO wrote:

Tuning in for tomorrow’s #TrueBlood premiere? Turn your TV on at 8:45 for a very special pre-show no HBO fan will want to miss. #GOT

It's the #GOT hashtag at the end that has gotten 'Game of Thrones' fans excited, of course. HBO may be planning on showing their first glimpse of footage tonight. I don't have cable, but fortunately everybody now knows about this, so there's about a thousand percent chance it ends up on the internet (HBO will probably put it there themselves; I'm a subscriber of theirs at youtube, and they love to put up previews and snippets on there). Anyway, I'm in bunches!

I did not get excited when I saw the GoT trailer at all.  It told me nothng.  I'm surprised Jack didn't jizz in his pants, though.

He did.  It's true he could make neither heads nor tails of it, but that didn't stop him from spraying Li'l Jacks all up against the backside of the crotch guard of his BVDs.

I've read some of the stuff Jack posted, but I haven't read the books, and I really don't know much about the story, so just having a promo of snowy woods with a voiceover saying "Winter is coming," just didn't do it for me.

I'm sure I'll watch it, and probably like it a lot, too, though.

That said, I tried to watch Bored to Death, and that's what it made me.  I tried Hung, but gave up about halfway through the season.  I didn't miss it.  I enjoy Entourage, but that's mostly for the tits and Jeremey Piven.  I gave Treme a shot, but it was also very slow.  Looking forward to Buscemi's series, though.

If I'd gone through any effort at all to see that promo, I think I would've killed myself.

I liked the promo because it makes the Game of Thrones series seem like it actually exists now.  Sure, they've been making it for a long time, but it only exited off in the ether somewhere.  Now it seems tangible.

That said, the teaser itself is pretty boring.  At least it had a slight semblence of footage in it.

I love the books (although not as much as Jack), and I can't wait to see how well they are able to adapt the dense text into a show.

Here's a site that is compiling a cast list for the series, and includes an artist's depictions of most of the characters next to photos of the actors playing the parts. The site's creator used the art of a fan who goes by "Amoka" who has done portraits of more characters than anybody else, AFAIK.

http://lexicopia.blogspot.com/2010/06/cast-of-hbos-game-of-thrones.html

That list includes three new actors that have been revealed in the past week, as new casting news is finally coming out with about a month to go before shooting. The series' author blogged this past weekend that five or six actors had been settled on but contracts hadn't been finalized, but that was before the last two were revealed, so at least three or four more are as yet unknown. The author also hinted that one secondary-major character, Petyr Baelish, was one of the parts that has been cast. Back before the series was greenlighted, there were rumors that Aidan Gillen's agent had been in contact with the producers about that part, which I thought would be awesome, mostly just cause I love 'The Wire' and want any of the UK actors involved in it to be in 'GoT'; the only actors that fit that description are Gillen, Dominic West, and Idris Elba. Elba's black, which probably rules him out, but the other two would be super.

HBO released a factsheet today summarizing the series and giving a comprehensive list of cast and crew that features a number of newly announced cast members.

HBO wrote:

“Game of Thrones” is a new original HBO series based on George R.R. Martin’s best-selling novels. In a world where summers span decades and winters can last a lifetime, the Westeros crown comes with a price.  Betrayal, lust, intrigue and supernatural forces shake the four corners of the Kingdom, from the scheming south and the savage eastern lands, to the frozen north and the ancient Wall that protects the realm from the darkness beyond.  Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and noble men vie for power in the bloody struggle for the Iron Throne.

GUEST CAST IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER:

Josef Altin as Pyp
Gethin Anthony as Renly Baratheon
Ciaran Bermingham as Mord
Esme Bianco as Ros
Susan Brown as Septa Mordane
Dominic Carter as Janos Slynt
Antonia Christophers as Mhaegen
Kate Dickie as Lysa Arryn
Roy Dotrice as Grand Maester Pycelle
Emun Elliott as Marillion
Lino Facioli as Robin Arryn
Jefferson Hall as Ser Hugh of the Vale
Derek Halligan as Alliser Thorne
Rhodri Hosking as Mycah
Margaret John as Old Nan
Finn Jones as Ser Loras Tyrell
Dermot Keaney as Gared
Francis Magee as Yoren
Joseph Mawle as Benjen Stark
Brendan McCormack as Ser Vardis Egan
Ian McElhinney as Ser Barristan Selmy
Luke McEwan as Rast
Kristian Nairn as Hodor
Rob Ostlere as Ser Waymar Royce
Eugene Simon as Lancel Lannister
Jamie Sives as Jory Cassel
John Standing as Jon Arryn
Conan Stevens as Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane
Peter Vaughan as Maester Aemon Targaryen
Miltos Yeromelou as Syrio Forel

I'm still at work, and am going to have to wait until I get home to see what images they have out there for these actors, but the roles I'm most curious about right now are Renly, Lysa and Jon Arryn.

Also, Martin's Doorways is being adapted into a graphic novel in November. I've had a saved ebay search for the VHS pilot for at least 5 years, so it'll be cool to see what I've never seen (and apparently should be thankful for).

Yeah, I saw the news about 'Doorways', though I've already read the script for that in 'Dreamsongs'. The actual pilot was based on a second script, so I'll never know how that one goes since I could never find that video on any of the filesharing sites I looked at.

GRRM has given more casting clues.  Fans seem to have guessed one: German born actress of Turkish parents Sibel Kikelli will play camp follower Shae.  Sibel apparently has won some awards for her work in German films, and before that had a short career in pornography.  Sweet.  Unfortunately, German porn is weird, so I'm not really that motivated to look up any of her stuff.  After I get used to seeing her on the show, I probably will.  I like seeing celebrities naked.

One of the last major pieces of casting for season 1 has been revealed: Charles Dance will be Tywin Lannister.  He's been an extremely popular fan choice since the beginning.  I've seen him in BBC's 'Bleak House', where it was extremely easy to imagine him as Tywin: he's cold, imposing and unsmiling in that production.  A lot of fans are saying this is the last major casting for season 1, but I don't know if that's true: there's still Roose Bolton and Walder Frey (Bolton might be able to be pushed out of the first season, but I don't think that's possible with Frey).

You should see him when a new book comes out. He devours it within a day, then pesters me endlessly until I've read it. I mean, it's like 10 years between books! I want to use some of that time reading, not just waiting around for the next one!
