'Game of Thrones' series Greenlighted

Posted by Jack S. Pharaoh on Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Holy fuck, yes. I know this means nothing to almost everyone here, but I've been waiting for this since the book series was first optioned three years ago. They even released the first production still, a shot apparently from the prologue of the book. So, yes, people, deal with me starting random threads and forcing irrelevant knowledge upon you. This is how Jack does business, aggresively and in a pompous third-person. Pray I never decide to educate the lot of you about pregnancy.

I wish Rickon would die. I think he's like 2 years old.

Jeez, Quay, you're obsessed with Rickon; he's not even in the books that much.

Ok, NOW I'm starting to get excited about this.

Just got finished watching an HD version of that video on YouTube. If I'm not mistaken, that final voiceover sounded like it came from Old Nan. With the story having so many characters, I kind of doubted she would be in the show. I also liked getting glimpses of other characters in the backgrounds of the scenes when they are talking about the main characters. I liked seeing glimpses of Benjen Stark, Khal Drogo, Gendry, Sandor Clegane (love the helmet!), and others. I also think the Dothraki horsemen look awesome!

All of that said, the footage of Tyrion was my absolute favorite. Tyrion and Jon Snow are my favorite characters in the books, so I'm glad to see that Tyrion seems to have translated well to the screen. I'm not sure about who they got for Jon Snow yet. He feels at odds with how I see the character in my head. Something about the way he talked seemed a bit off to me, but it's hard to tell with such a short glimpse.

I've been looking through some of the screencaps that have been made of the latest video; I liked this one, and the description that the admin of the Westeros site put with it:

GameOfThrones_Preview02_Screencap_124.jpg Daenarys sunset

A very apropos quote from A Game of Thrones to go with this gorgeous image of Daenerys looking out to sea as the sun is setting:

“Somewhere beyond the sunset, across the narrow sea, lay a land of green hills and flowered plains and great rushing rivers, where towers of dark stone rose amidst magnificent blue-grey mountains, and armored knights rode to battle beneath the banners of their lords. The Dothraki called that land Rhaesh Andahli, the land of the Andals. In the Free Cities, they talked of Westeros and the Sunset Kingdoms.”

Per George Martin, principal photography on HBO's first season of GAME OF THRONES has now wrapped.

I hear the final scene of the first season involves the explosion of some big safe house, and that fans of the books are going to be divided over it.

* * *

I was in Borders the other day.  I noticed there was a very convoluted looking board game based on Martin's books in there.  Since Jack S. Pharaoh is Jack S. Pharaoh, I assume he's played it.

Is it any good, Jack S. Pharaoh?

I haven't gotten into any peripheral 'A Song of Ice and Fire' merchandise.  I've read the three novellas GRRM has written, and the graphic novels that were adapted from the first two.  I've perused the book 'The Art of Ice and Fire', but have not purchased it, in part because of the forthcoming book, 'The World of Ice and Fire', which is going to contain some of that artwork.  From what I understand, that book is written by the admin of the Westeros board and his wife, with help from GRRM; there's a forum on the boards dedicated to it, where fans have been able to provide input.  I'm pretty curious to see what it looks like, if and when it ever comes out.  I've heard there are some games based on the Ice and Fire books, at least one of which is no longer produced, I think.  The one you saw may be some sort of strategy game, I suppose.

I HAVE WATCHED THE BEHIND THE SCENES BIT!

Was I supposed to create a new thread to say that?

HBO showed a fifteen minute collection of footage to critics yesterday: Maureen Ryan of AOL gives a synopsis.  She also claims that HBO will be putting some new pictures online today, so that's something to look forward to (for me).  Still haven't heard what the premiere date is supposed to be (other than April; fans have speculated the first Sunday in April).  Sky made a deal with HBO to purchase rights to all of their series, past and present, for the next five years, and, from what I've heard, they also plan to air the show in April, though it will only be on their exclusive new channel (probably this means a delay of some kind between airing of the episodes in the US and the UK).  Being American, this is a little unclear to me, but the gist I get is that Sky has some channel that airs for free, but you'll have to have a subscription to get this.  I write this of course because Dalty lives o'er there, so I want to keep him as informed of things as I can.  I know a lot of UK fans of the books do not particularly care for the idea, which is amusing to me: as an American, I'm used to pay TV, and fans here are pretty ecstatic to have HBO producing this series.

I submit that Ol' Moneybags Dalty pay for all of Britain's Sky TV!

And we can use some free HBO over here too!

There's no way that's correct; it should be just about three months, so it should be more like 100 days, give or take.

Another Martin fan here.  I read the series this summer after picking up all four books at a second hand shop.  I got to about page ten and I was hooked. Normally I'll pass on fantasy but I find Martin crafts a story that, at least to me, reads like historical fiction.  The fantasy in the story is actually pretty light, especially in AGOT.  And his characters are hardly the stereotypical archetype so familiar to the genre. The heroes and the bad guys are complicated and their motivations unclear. He fleshes them out brilliantly.

I am a bit concerned about how HBO will incorporate Martin’s wit.  In addition to the story and politics, it’s Martin’s clever writing and that drew me in.  I don’t want to see Tyrion lose one ounce of smugness.

Looking forward to April.

Looks like this is it; haven't watched all of it yet, but looks like the Iron Throne is prominent. It's clearly made out of swords, like in the book, but not sure I'm crazy about the design. Not a big deal, of course.

cov_10.jpg Jaime Lannister

I thought about posting this artwork earlier: it's one of my favorite ASoIaF-related paintings, and it's the best design I've seen for the Iron Throne.  Some of the fans actually thought that the actor playing Jaime sitting on the throne in the last teaser was supposed to mimic this image, but I dunno.
