'Game of Thrones' series Greenlighted

Posted by Jack S. Pharaoh on Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Holy fuck, yes. I know this means nothing to almost everyone here, but I've been waiting for this since the book series was first optioned three years ago. They even released the first production still, a shot apparently from the prologue of the book. So, yes, people, deal with me starting random threads and forcing irrelevant knowledge upon you. This is how Jack does business, aggresively and in a pompous third-person. Pray I never decide to educate the lot of you about pregnancy.

I'm pretty sure one of them was Ilyn Payne.

Varys just seemed obvious.  I recalled that we'd seen someone who liked jewels, but couldn't remember who it was, so after you posted, I went back and checked and found Illyrio.

New 'Game of Thrones' video; haven't watched it yet.

There's been word this week of a screening of the first two episodes, first for executives for channels that HBO is trying to sell the show to in foreign markets (think that screening may have been a week ago; I forget), but then another screening for cast and crew, which has been confirmed by some cast members on twitter.  One fan at WiC seemed to the be the first to post that this second screening was coming, and now he claims to have been there and seen the first two eps.  Says they were awesome (I don't take this to mean much, of course, but I'm glad (s)he liked them), but he also claims that it was revealed at the screening that HBO has given the go-ahead for season 2.  Not very surprising, if this is true: they greenlighted season 2s for 'Boardwalk Empire' and 'Treme' immediately after their season premieres, or at least that's when they officially greenlighted them.  HBO seems to go as much on their own personal liking of the show, as they do ratings.  'The Wire' managed five seasons, and I think it averaged less than 1 million viewers an episode.  Of course, that show also probably wasn't very expensive.  Similar ratings to that for GoT won't have the show lasting very long.  But, anyway, HBO seems like they've been high on this project, so an early go-ahead for season 2 would make sense.  I figure the show will last at least two or three seasons.  To go longer than that, it's probably going to have to actually be at least a medium-sized hit.

Just finished Clash of Kings and diving right in to Storm of Swords. I hope he gets that fifth book out before I hit the end! Also, I don't know if this has been posted on here, but one of my friends sent this to me.

There has never been anything more certain in this world in that the fifth book will NOT be finished before you get through book #4. And then after it's finished, it'll be another 6 months or so before it reaches store shelves.

Now that I know Jackie Gleeson and Harold Lloyd are in the cast, I'm extra excited.

Also, Julian Glover.  That's cool.  The new Conan apparently has a part, too.

It does kind of suck watching that, because at first you're like "Oh cool, that person's in it!" and then you're like "Shit, but they don't survive the first book. Damnit!"

'A Storm of Swords' is pretty awesome; it has some of the series' most iconic moments, and one of my favorite side character, The Red Viper. It's probably the book that is most commonly mentioned as being the favorite by fans of the series. The fourth book is definitely the most commonly mentioned least favorite; that hasn't really helped the long wait for the fifth book.

Still not done with Game of Thrones yet.  I'm wondering if Sansa's gonna get raped by the prince and knights.

If Baby Thursty was in the story, he'd get raped, probably by The Mountain.

Baby Thursty: "I'll sit on a dick if my name's not Ol' Beau Watkins!"

The Mountain: "Hmmmmmmmmmmm...............!"

Mildly interesting GoT-related stories today: one of the people who viewed the screening of the first two episodes from a week or so ago comments on it.  This commentator viewed it with a somewhat critical eye, as I guess he was viewing it with the consideration of whether or not to attempt to purchase rights to air the show in his country, but he was still pretty positive about it.

Secondly, one of the incredibly rabid fans of the series found some special effects shots on a graphic designer's online portfolio, or something like that.  I'm continually amazed that the fans find stuff like this.

Rabid fans can be scary when it comes to unearthing details.  I really got into the spoiler game when Episode II news was flooding the web.  We got spoiler shots, storyboards, animatics, et cetera.  The script even leaked months before the movie was released.  In my mind, I made a bunch of the cuts that would have made it a better movie.  I also imagined much better performances.  I felt like I had already seen the movie when I finally went to see it.  What I saw was a good deal worse than I was expecting.  I wasn't even one of those people who had covinced themselves Episode I was a warm-up, and that all of the first prequel's "problems" had been "addressed."  I just saw an occasionally competent script where obvious cuts and rewrites could have been made to improve on it.

I remember how upset some people were when it was found out that an Enya song would be at the end of Fellowship of the Ring.  People don't seem to have too big a problem with it, these days.  I'm not too fond of the song.  I had some ill will for Enya music going into the movie because of all those 9/11 tribute videos featuring "Only Time."  She had barely even been on my radar before then.  Basically, I knew she had been a part of Clannad, which was a band I knew existed because my ex-stepbrother used to blast "Robin (The Hooded Man)" from his bedroom.  Then it would end.  Stop.  Rewind.  Click.  Play.  I came to hate that song.  What a dull fucking song.  And what a stupid line to repeat over and over again.

These days, I like it.  I like it because I used to hate it.  I guess that's just my way.  I love the stuff I used to love, I love the stuff I used to like, and I love the stuff I used to hate.

Zack Snyder just felt a disturbance in the Force.

There's a cutoff at age ten.  If I didn't experience it before then, my opinion of it isn't likely to change much.

I thought the cutoff was age three.

I always preferred Enya's solo work to Clannad.  Yeah, I like Enya.  Fuck off.

New trailer; has a lot of footage from previous previews, but some cool new stuff. A quick image of Ned in the godswood under the heart tree was pretty cool: the weirwood tree had blood red leaves (which I assume were shaped like hands), just like in the books.
