This guy kinda reminds me of my dad. He was a guy who went from having a lot of money to hitting hard financial times. He decided he was going to sail around the world in a small yacht and document it on-line. He reached out to educational institutions and various other corporations and tried to get them to foot his bill.

"I'm going to be docking in culturally diverse places! We're going to learn all the native customs and introduce ourselves to all sorts of new flora and fauna! It'll be a learning experience. You know, for kids!"

Naturally, nobody gave him a cent. He, his wife, their dog, and the boat made it to Panama. He said he was going to make Panama his "home base." It ended up being as far as he got. He wound up having to come back to Atlanta to work. The wife stayed behind in Panama. She hated it there and was absolutely miserable, but someone had to look after the land. He was coming back, he said, as soon as he built up a big enough kitty.

Then he moved to Afghanistan for a year. To embiggen this fabled kitty. Then Florida. Then he got brain cancer. Panama's done. No more of that shit. His wife's back in the states.

My father needs some medicine he has no way of affording. Insurance won't help, because insurance is a fucker. I'm not sure if they've sold their land in Panama. Maybe they should. Then again, I doubt they'll get much for it. I think they got suckered when they bought it. I'm almost sure they did. White guys pay way too much for shit.

What the hell is the purpose of health insurance in the U.S.? You keep paying those fuckers money and when you end up needing their services in return, they often won't fucking cover even 50% of your cost. You'd probably be better off putting aside the money you'd pay for health insurance and then using it when you actually have a medical emergency. The end result would probably come out the same, except you wouldn't be giving your money to con-men in the process.

It's as close to being a legalized Ponzi scheme as anything I've seen. I've heard people say the same about Social Security, but I don't have any personal experience with it beyond keeping the card they issued me in my back pocket. That fucker's pretty dingy and weather-worn. I'd laminate it, but people in the know pooh-pooh lamination.

(Yes, Dalty. Their poop is all slick and see-through.)

As mentioned in an annoyance thread, I handle the business side of a chiropractor's office. Dealing with these assholes is all I do.

What have I learned in 8 months on the job?

We would, in all sincerity, be better off going back to the barter system. "Want your back cracked? Come over and babysit my kid." "Want your heart operated on? Bring me a dozen live chickens and your prettiest daughter."

The system as it exists now is so unbelievably fucked up. So, so, SO far in need of reform. But hey, it's "the greatest health care system the world has ever seen!"

Thanks Republican. Thanks Tea Party. Great job, voting for the status quo. Assholes.

Is this the type of scabies that fornicates on your body?

We'd be better off without chiropractors to begin with. Fucking snake oil salesmen. (Preemptive strike: Yes. They're the type of people who fornicate with salesmen of snake oil.)

Adam54 wrote:

Yes. They dig into your flesh, feed on your blood, lay eggs, and die. The eggs hatch, they dig out of your flesh, get it on, dig back into your flesh in a different spot, lay eggs, and die.

Just to be clear: it's the female laying the eggs. I don't know that the male does much digging. I think they might just sort of hang out on or in your skin until they die. There's the fucking, of course. I think a much lower percentage of the eggs that hatch are dudes. They might get to do a lot of fucking before they croak. I'll see if I can find the info.

That's pretty good, Q. I don't think I'd divulge the scabies infestation, though. I think I'd tell him I was trading for something else and let the scabies be a surprise. Fucking scabies. Fucking chiropractors.

I'm looking at the bottles of supplements on the wall right now, Goiter, and I see no snake oil.

My boss is a good chiropractor! Not one of the shady ones, I swear! I wouldn't be working here if she was.

She doesn't have to be shady to be a scam artist. She doesn't even have to know she's a scam artist. She may have come to believe her own hype. So say Penn & Teller, at least.

I don't believe it just because Penn & Teller say it.

(I'M LYING!)

I've always believed it.

(ANOTHER LIE! I TOTALLY BELIEVED EVERYTHING ANYONE EVER CLAIMED ABOUT ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE BEFORE I WATCHED THIS SHOW! I EVEN BELIEVED THE STUFF THAT CONTRADICTED THE OTHER STUFF!)

It's possible for a Showtime TV show to be a solid and well-researched piece of journalism, right?

No? Any takers?

It's not like Penn & Teller are famously and purposely fraudulent, themselves. That would totally undermine any argument I might want to make about the truthfulness of their claims.

I am not sure there is a perfect healthcare system.

The NHS is damned funky in theory, but a bloated and bureaucratic mess in reality.  At least, I suppose, their primary function is supposed to be medical care, even with a few horror stories lately.

I am not sure what people expect from an insurance company.  Their first commitment is to their shareholders and that is profit.  Which kinda runs contrary to the idea of care.

I'm fine with an imperfect health care system. I just want one that will allow me to be poor and still keep me alive.

So I thought Medicare and Medicaid did something towards that in the US?

When I watched Fox News when in San Diego they had adverts on for services like "Surviving Obamacare - How To Keep Your Family Alive In The Face Of The Threat" and so on.

I must have really, really misunderstood what Obamacare was about.

You also appear to have misunderstood its start date. It isn't in effect yet. It starts on January 1, 2014. We won't know whether it will save us, destroy us, or be absolutely no different from what we already have until after then. (I'm far from an optimist, so I don't expect it to save us.) For the time being, we're trying to survive under the old system. This means avoiding the doctor and dentist despite having specific reasons to go and hoping we don't die in the interim.

I had several thousand dollars' worth of dental work done (one cleaning, three fillings [done over the course of two trips], a root canal, one extraction at the dentist, and another extraction done by an oral surgeon) while I was in Germany. It cost me ten Euros on top of the 75 Euros a month Jubbers and I paid for health insurance. (I mean that the amount the two of us had to paid combined was 75 Euros, and not that we had to pay 75 Euros a piece.) The ten Euros was a quarterly fee I only had to pay because I wound up putting the insurance to work.

During this time, Jubbers made something like ten combined visits to OB/GYNs and specialists. She had to pay ten Euros for one quarter and another ten for the next quarter. She also paid a little for some optional prenatal tests. We paid very little on top of our monthly insurance payment. If we had stayed in Germany to have Jubboiter, we could have done it essentially for free. Instead, we did it in America and wound up handing over every single cent in our possession to various health care facilities and specialists.

So many concessions had to be made to appease both sides that by the time the Affordable Care Act went through, it looked different from how it looked at the outset. It wouldn't have been anywhere near as good as the German system even if it had gone through untouched, unfortunately. The US is too set in its ways to allow for truly affordable health care across the board.

I'm sure there are scenarios where I would have been denied health care in Germany as a direct result of my poverty, but I didn't experience any. I was poor, I received immediate care despite of it, and I'm not left paying for it a year or more after the fact.

I've heard people from countries other than Germany say they were put on waiting lists thanks to their country's universal health care system, but I haven't heard the same from Germans about theirs. Maybe they've had these waits, too, but are too proud to admit it to outsiders. I don't know. I only know that I received care and that I am grateful for it.

I might have received a higher standard of care than I did if I had been rich and had a fancier private insurance, but the standard of care I received seemed to me to be at least as high as anything I've ever received in America, so I have little to complain about.

You have the privatized insurance option in Germany if you want it and can afford it. You don't have to pay for it on top of another insurance. You can choose one or the other.

Good ol' Germany! It's the best of both insurance worlds! It's a goddamn utopia! The Germans have gotten everything right since time dawned! EVERYTHING!

But the reason that worked is because Hicks didn't have to pay for your healthcare through his taxes.
