I generally like Garth, but little things always annoy me about his articles. Django almost certainly won't be a blockbuster. Tarantino has never made a blockbuster. He's only made two movies in his lifetime that have made over $100 million. Inglorious Basterds made $120 million. That's the highest number he's ever hit. Pulp Fiction made $107 million back in '94. It's the biggest as far as adjusted grosses go. Adjusted to 2012, it barely clears $200 million.

Most of his movies fell somewhere between the $25-$70 million range. True, this one has Leo and Foxx (and Leo's no longer competing against himself with Gatsby), but I don't see it being a blockbuster. It's possible it'll make somewhere between 100-150 million, but it's no guarantee.  It won't be as straightforward and traditional a narrative as True Grit, so it probably won't pull in True Grit numbers. The Hobbit will probably still be sucking up most of the money by when Django is released.

It also seems weird to me that he would suggest it's some sort of surprise that The Miserables is being mentioned for award contention. It's been my understanding that people have been expecting this ever since the day it was announced.

And I'm not sure what universe he's been in, but the critical response to The Master hasn't really been all that divisive. Even on Metacritic (it's generally harder to get a high score on Metacritic than it is on Rotten Tomatoes), it's listed as having "Universal acclaim."

I don't like musicals, but even I'm interested in seeing Les Mis. Maybe that's just for Hathaway and Seyfreid, though.

I'm interested in seeing it because I liked the musical, but also because they filmed it with the actors singing while they act instead of dubbing in another voice later.  There is a name for that type of filming, but I can't recall.  I saw a short on it before Skyfall and they showed them with earpieces in while they acted and a guy was playing the music on a keyboard to the tempo that they were singing.  Then, they added the orchestra in during editing.  I am expecting it to sound very different than a normal musical.

Turn your head and cough!

That's ridiculous! All singing should be lipsynched and dubbed. Like Glee does!

Musicals are fucking liars.  If I want the world to explode into song around me spontaneously in the street, to full orchestral accompaniment, I had to pay for it.

Cost so much I had to give up.

Hugh Jackman is reason enough for me to put this on my Christmas list.
