Movie lead times..... too long?

Posted by Daltons chin dimple on Friday, April 19, 2013

Teasers for teasers, then teasers, then trailers, then the hype and the junkets and the cast on chat shows etc. etc. are all part of the movie making & advertising business.

However it seems to start earlier and earlier these days.

I showed Mrs (not Mrs) Dalty the final trailers for Trek and Supes and she agreed they look good but said (I half quote, half paraphrase) 'For Gods sake are they not out yet? I have been seeing trailers for these forever! Bored of them already.'

The teaser for Supes was out with TDKR, and the Comic-Con footage was before even that. Does she have a point. Do they start the build up too early?

What do you guys think?

I feel inclined to agree with her. I try not to pay attention to the hype around movies until a week or two before they come out. Then I'll maybe watch a trailer. It makes the watching experience more rewarding, I think.

Most recent example: I hadn't even heard of Oblivion (*ba-dum-tssshhh*) until they started showing trailers for it on TV a couple of weeks ago, and now I'm extremely interested. Had I seen the trailer a year ago, my interest probably would have cooled down by now.

It doesn't matter to me. I don't get to see them until they come to Redbox.

As a self-confessed movie geek I personally get a buzz from getting informed a long way out and, for films that interest me, following their development.

However I thought it was an interesting viewpoint from her, who sees films as diverting entertainment and not a lot more.

Movies used to mean the world to me.

They still mean the world to me. I'm not big on indoctrinating children, but I may have to do it with Jubboiter. I'll do my best to convince her that movies are a religious experience, and that they're best enjoyed with her mouth fucking shut. Also, if she needs to pee she'll just have to do it in the theater seat. No biggie. The custodians'll just throw a bag over it and let it dry overnight.

Jubboiter will do as she pleases in the place of her fathers worship.

I usually don't look at the development/production reporting until after I've watched the movie. That's what I did with Prometheus. I think I went into the movie having only watched the TV trailer and having read some of the preliminary discussion here on the boards, but I hadn't watched any of the promotional materials they put out on the Web. That may have been the reason why I enjoyed the movie as much as I did the first time I watched it.

I then went back and looked up a bunch of the stuff that was released in anticipation of the movie. I guess it makes more sense to me to see which aspects of the movie they chose to highlight after I've already seen the film.

All I had seen of Prometheus was the trailer. I avoided spoilers for that movie like I had never avoided spoilers before. It took me so long to get to see it that I eventually had two minor details spoiled via cultural osmosis.

Still, it was only sort of there for me when I actually did see it. I guess I kinda liked it. Some of it was pretty silly. Forgot it pretty quickly.

Interesting question. I just read the EW summer movie preview, and was more intrigued by a few movies I hadn't heard of before than something like "Man of Steel," which hasn't impressed me with the early news/trailers. But I'm chomping on the bit for the new Trek, everything I see just whets my appetite. So I guess it depends on what your inclinations are.

Trailers these days either tell you the entire goddam story (any Tyler Perry movie) or are just fucking stupid (John Carter).  Then they show them over and over and over.

The Superman trailer seems great only in that it doesn't entirely suck, which automatically qualifies it for greatness.

Or...

We are stupid, so they make stupid movies and sell them to us with stupid trailers all of which keep us stupid.

Thus the Madagascar series is born.

Movies are fantastic these days if you are a 13 year old girl, Quasar, or a fat, middle-aged single white woman.

Movies must be made to please us. We must be pleased! We deserve it!
