Director Tim Burton attended the Disney panel held today at Comic-Con 2009 to talk about Alice in Wonderland but he also brought a surprise with him, someone he refered to as his "imaginary friend." With that introduction none other than Johnny Depp walked out on the stage and was met with thunderous applause from the 6,000 assembled fans within the San Diego convention center's Hall H.
HitFix covered the Alice panel and has a few quotes from Burton and the reaction from Depp to the crowd's welcome.

The day we've all been waiting for has arrived! USA Today gets the exclusive and debuts the first official looks at Alice in Wonderland's Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), the Queen of Hearts (Helena Bonham Carter) and the White Queen (Anne Hathaway). The paper also has a new and very neat feature which allows you to pan around inside of three environments you'll see in the movie, the mushroom garden, Alice's first meeting of Tweedledum and Tweedledee and Alice greeting the White Rabbit in the animal topiary. Be prepared: all of the imagery is trippy, even by normal Tim Burton standards!

Seven new pieces of concept art from the movie went up on a Russian website, like this one showing Alice walking through a patch of gigantic mushrooms. How they got there we haven't a clue but they're certainly interesting enough to let the word out.

A special IMAX 3D release of Alice in Wonderland was announced today by Disney and the IMAX Corporation. The IMAX version will debut in those theaters on the same day as the movie's standard format release, March 5, 2010.
"If ever there was a film that cried out to be presented in Disney Digital 3D and the premium IMAX 3D format, Tim Burton's fantastic interpretation of Alice in Wonderland is that film," remarked Mark Zoradi, president of the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Group. "This is going to be an eye-popping cinematic experience as Tim takes moviegoers down the rabbit hole and into the dimensional world filled with incredible characters, sly humor, and wild adventures. Disney's partnership with IMAX is taking shape with two amazing films already on the schedule. We look forward to working with them in bringing exciting new experiences and quality entertainment to IMAX screens around the world."
"Alice in Wonderland is a fantastic addition to our 2010 film slate," added Greg Foster, chairman and president of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "Combining a beloved Disney classic re-designed through the imagination of Tim Burton's creative vision with these incredibly outrageous characters and world class actors certainly makes for an event-status film, and we’re pleased to add another level of excitement to this highly-anticipated movie."
This will be the third picture from a five-film agreement between IMAX and Disney.

Slashfilm gives us three inside casting newsbites and claims that Michael Sheen (the first guy mentioned in the title for Frost/Nixon and currently carving up vampires on the big screen in Underworld: Rise of the Lycans) has landed the role of the White Rabbit while Stephen Fry will play the Chesire Cat. They've got some speculation on how Sheen's furry form might be visualized in the mo-cap film. Who's the third actor named? Find out.
