Straight from the speaking orfice of Joss Whedon comes confirmation of Jeremy Renner being cast as the purple-clad Avenger, Hawkeye. "There will be some avenging that takes place during the film and that's about all I can tell you. I think it's well-known that Jeremy Renner is joining us as Hawkeye, which is so exciting for me and the rest of the cast," Whedon told On the Red Carpet last evening after his panel.

Then just to see how far he could get with breaking the news, Whedon delivered this tongue-in-cheek kicker: "Killing Iron Man. I'm going to kill him. I kill people. He's wicked popular. You're going to cry, though. I just think it'll be funny. It's a pre-credit sequence. It's kind of wacky. I'm totally kidding. I'm killing Hawkeye."

Kidding. Right? Joss?

At the panel he shared with Star Trek director J.J. Abrams, Joss Whedon for once and all confirmed that he is indeed directing The Avengers movie. Believe it or not, up 'til this point Whedon's new job title had not been officially acknowledged by Marvel Studios or Paramount Pictures.

"The thing I love about it is how completely counter-intuitive it is," Whedon told the sitting fans (and got reported online by Coming Soon.) "These people should not be in the same room, much less the same team. The very definition of family."

He also acknowledged that he was still in the process of reworking the movie's story and is finding his own way to make sure that the characters' voices remain faithful to the actors that portray them as well as their history in the Marvel Comics universe. "The first job I had outside of TV was a script doctor. You have to blend in. I think it is easy to fall into the aesthetic of something you love. I will be respectful of the established tone... or seven!"

According to Deadline, Mark Ruffalo is in "late-stage discussions" to play Bruce Banner in the movie.

Ruffalo is an unusual choice, being known for mostly appearing in dramas like Shutter Island, Zodiac, All the King's Men and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. If Ruffalo is cast he'll be the third actor to portray the character in a movie inside a decade, similar to what happened with the recasting of Batman in Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin.

Edward Norton has responded to the controversy surrounding Marvel Studios decision to recast Bruce Banner.

"As most of you know, I don't like to talk much about the business of making movies because it means a lot to me to protect the audience's fullest enjoyment of the 'magic' that films can have. But I am so appreciative of the outpouring of support from fans of the Hulk and the Avengers that I feel it would be rude not to respond. So here goes: It seems it won't work out for me to continue playing Bruce Banner for Marvel in The Avengers. I sincerely hoped it could happen and be great for everyone, but it hasn't turned out as we all had hoped. I know this is disappointing to many people and that makes me sad. But I am very sincerely grateful to Marvel for extending the offer and even more so for giving me the chance to be a part of the Hulk's long and excellent history. And I really can't thank the fans enough for how much enthusiasm you've sent my way about what Louis and I tried to do in our turn with the legend. It means a lot to me. I grew up with Banner and the Hulk and have been a fan of every incarnation. I'm really proud, and very blessed, to have been one of them and will be thrilled to see him live on through other actors. Hulk is bigger than all of us, that's why we love him, right?

"Sincerely,

Edward Norton"

Hitfix has again posted the latest development in the Edward Norton/Avengers casting brouhaha, this time with Norton's agent addressing head on the comments made by Kevin Feige about the actor.

As Hitfix reported yesterday, Feige said that his company's decision to not bring back Norton for the part of Bruce Banner wasn't based on financial reasons but instead "in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members." The insinuation that Feige's words mean is that somehow Edward Norton wasn't interested in working as part of an ensemble.

Brian Swardstorm, Norton's agent at WME, fired back and gave his statement to the website:

"This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light.  Here are the facts:  two months ago, Kevin called me and said he wanted Edward to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers.  He told me it would be his fantasy to bring Edward on stage with the rest of the cast at ComiCon and make it the event of the convention.  When I said that Edward was definitely open to this idea, Kevin was very excited and we agreed that Edward should meet with Joss Whedon to discuss the project.  Edward and Joss had a very good meeting (confirmed by Feige to me) at which Edward said he was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble cast.  Marvel subsequently made him a financial offer to be in the film and both sides started negotiating in good faith.  This past Wednesday, after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided to go in another direction with the part.  This seemed to us to be a financial decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings.

"We know a lot of fans have voiced their public disappointment with this result, but this is no excuse for Feige's mean spirited, accusatory comments.  Counter to what Kevin implies here, Edward was looking forward to the opportunity to work with Joss and the other actors in the Avengers cast, many of whom are personal friends of his.  Feige's statement is unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory.  Mr. Norton talent, tireless work ethic and professional integrity deserve more respect, and so do Marvel's fans."

Will Joss Whedon and Norton himself also go public with their thoughts on this darkening and no longer private business matter?

Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios' President of Production, has confirmed to Hitfix that Edward Norton will not be reprising the role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers.

"We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers," Feige told the website. "Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks."

So, did Feige just say that Norton isn't an actor that "embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members"?

According to a source that spoke with Hitfix's Drew McWeeny, Marvel has made a decision not to hire Edward Norton to reprise his role as Bruce Banner in The Avengers movie. Reportedly the idea is for Marvel to cast "an unknown" for the part.

McWeeny states that, from his vantage point, both Norton and Avengers director Joss Whedon seem to be enthusiastic about working together on the movie. The problem seems to rest with Marvel and for whatever reason they don't want Norton to be a part of the superhero ensemble.

The Avengers movie starts filming in February 2011. That's the word straight from one of the people that should know, Samuel L. Jackson. The actor who plays Nick Fury in the two Iron Man movies told the press that he will start training to get in shape for the movie soon and that, "The Avengers is my own starring vehicle for that character, pretty much."

While answering questions about his Clash of the Titans remake (to be released shortly), director Louis Leterrier revealed that he was one of several candidates on the short list for The Avengers movie job.

"I am on the shortlist, but I'm at the bottom of the shortlist, I'm sure," The Incredible Hulk helmer told Ain't It Cool News. "I don't know who the other guys are, but I have a great relationship with [Marvel], and I've been very vocal to them and everyone else that I am the one to direct it. I loved my time at Marvel. I loved those guys. They're fantastic. Kevin is such a passionate boss; he gets his hands dirty. It's a universe I want to keep exploring. I was frustrated with [THE INCREDIBLE HULK]. It was like, 'That's it? Only one superhero? Can I do more???' We'll see. Time will tell."
