Michael Petroni has been hired to write a new draft of Dawn Treader. The Queen of the Damned screenwriter is going to take over from where Richard LaGravanese (P.S. I Love You, Beloved) left off.

Petroni's next work to be seen on the screen is the thriller Possession starring Sarah Michelle Gellar.

20th Century Fox will partner with Walden Media and make The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Michael Apted will remain onboard to direct the picture and Skandar Keyes, Georgie Henley and Ben Barnes will reprise their roles as Edmund, Lucy and Caspian, respectively. The cost for the three-quel will be downsized from the $200 million dollars spent on Prince Caspian to about $140 million. Filming is slated to begin this summer for a holiday 2010 release. Walt Disney Pictures has decided to not make a third Chronicles of Narnia movie. While the studio didn't offer an official explanation publicly the reason for getting cold feet is likely due to the not-so-stellar box office that the second film had, Prince Caspian. While film #1, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe grossed $745 million worldwide when it was released in winter 2005, Caspian only managed to accumulate $419 million worldwide on an estimated budget of $200 million before marketing and publicity costs.

But don't count out all hope just yet: another studio may sweep in and decide to partner with Walden Media on Dawn Treader. [Full story]
