Mark Wahlberg will star in a remake of an Icelandic thriller called Reykjavic-Rotterdam. The original movie came out this year and became one of the most critically praised films in Iceland, winning five of the country's top film awards. It will also be Iceland's official submission for the 2010 Academy Awards.
The film is about a former ship worker who is fired from his job for smuggling booze between the two Icelandic cities. Unable to find work on another vessel, the schlub takes a job as a lowly security guard. When his friend asks him if he wants to take part in another score, the main character agrees. What he doesn't know is that his "best friend" has set him up to take a fall and to remove him from the picture so he can make moves on the guy's wife.
Working Title is developing the remake for Aaron Guzikowski (who's making Prisoners with Wahlberg right now) to write the script for. Baltasar Kormakur, who starred in the original Reykjavic-Rotterdam and who owned the remake rights, is slated direct the new movie. Wahlberg will be one of the movie's producers along with his Entourage partner Stephen Levinson. [Full story]
