District 9 came out in top spot on its opening day grossing an estimated $14.2 million dollars. That's a very impressive showing for the low-budget sci-fi actioner considering that the film's budget is nestled around just $30 million dollars. The opening also set a record for a Sony Pictures R-rated August release. It's also the second-best R-rated opening for any studio release (behind American Pie 2's $16.5 million opening day.)

This week's issue of Entertainment Weekly will sport a District 9 cover and feature an interview with executive producer Peter Jackson, director Neill Blomkamp and star Sharlto Copley. An interesting fact uncovered in EW's coverage was that when Copley was a 20-year-old TV producer he gave the then 14-year-old director his first job in the movie industry creating computer graphics. "And he's certainly returned the favor," Copley says.

A CA reader sent us this photo of a District 9 bus bench on the north side of Ventura Boulevard, about 40 feet east of Woodman. They're popping up everywhere.

The viral marketing campaign for District 9 is intensifying by entering the real world. First Showing published photos of a bus stop bench in Los Angeles alerting transit riders that the seat was intended only for humans. If someone were to spot an alien using the seat the bench tells the person to call a phone number (1-866-666-6001) and then alert them that "non-human secretions may corrode metal!"

Last week's debut of the trailer for District 9 didn't reveal all. If you watched it then you know that the faces of the aliens were fuzzed out and that the interrogation scene at the end of the trailer didn't translate the alien's speech into our language. Well, now that problem has been rectified by the viral marketing website MNU Spreads Lies. Their webmaster has posted the District 9 trailer with the subtitles and clear view of the alien's face.
