Universal has cancelled the April 29, 2010 release of The Thing for a later date still yet to be determined. Instead the studio will now release Fast Five in The Thing's old late April release date slot, two months earlier. An early April release proved to work spectacularly for Fast and Furious, the last film in the franchise.

The studio released a plot synopsis for Fast Five today. Here's how Universal describes what goes down in movie #5:
"Vin Diesel and Paul Walker lead a reunion of returning all-stars from every chapter of the explosive franchise built on speed in Fast Five. In this installment, former cop Brian O'Conner (Walker) partners with ex-con Dom Toretto (Diesel) on the opposite side of the law. Dwayne Johnson joins returning favorites Jordana Brewster, Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Matt Schulze, Tego Calderon and Don Omar for this ultimate high-stakes race.
"Since Brian and Mia Toretto (Brewster) broke Dom out of custody, they've blown across many borders to elude authorities. Now backed into a corner in Rio de Janeiro, they must pull one last job in order to gain their freedom. As they assemble their elite team of top racers, the unlikely allies know their only shot of getting out for good means confronting the corrupt businessman who wants them dead. But he's not the only one on their tail.
"Hard-nosed federal agent Luke Hobbs (Johnson) never misses his target. When he is assigned to track down Dom and Brian, he and his strike team launch an all-out assault to capture them. But as his men tear through Brazil, Hobbs learns he can't separate the good guys from the bad. Now, he must rely on his instincts to corner his prey... before someone else runs them down first."

Great news for fans of the Fast and Furious franchise: Universal has signed stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, director Justin Lin and producer Neal Moritz for the fifth movie. The screenplay is being written by Chris Morgan and Variety tells us that it will have Dom and Brian on the lam as fugitives from the law. Here's where things get a little iffy: the studio is refering to the movie under the working title of Fast Five. Is that good or bad for you?

On his Facebook page, Vin Diesel spoke a bit about what he's been privy to on the Fast and Furious development front:
"If 2009's Fast and Furious was chapter one, what writer Chris Morgan just delivered is Chapter 2 and chapter 3.
"I have never been submitted a two story saga from a studio before... it is very exciting, and shows a commitment level that is hard not to respond to."

With the fourth Fast & Furious film crossing the coveted $100 million dollar domestic box office mark today (and only in its second weekend of release), it makes sense that people are asking when, not if, the fifth movie will come. And Paul Walker has at least offered his own opinion that there will be a fifth movie -- and that both he and co-star Vin Diesel will be back.
"This was supposed to be it," Walker dished out on a radio program called Valentine in the Morning yesterday. "There wasn’t supposed to be the open-ended closing like there was. When I first read the screenplay, I was like, 'Man, look what they’re doing.' But without question, with the way things opened up, Vin and I will be coming back, we’re making a fifth one, and we’re going to Brazil, that’s it."
So Walker has some kind of inside intel for the location for movie #5. Now all we need is Diesel confirming it's on and we're gassing up for a road trip.
