Steven Spielberg has departed Harvey leaving the remake without a director. According to Variety, the filmmaker gave notice to 20th Century Fox earlier this week. The studio had put on hold stages for set construction to begin in the new year. While he had been developing Harvey, Spielberg approached Tom Hanks and later Robert Downey Jr. about playing the film's lead. Hanks turned down the offer while Downey expressed mild interest, asking for script changes before deciding if it would be something that he would take on. At the present time Harvey does not have any acting talent attached to it.

After mulling over what would be his next film after Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn, Steven Spielberg has decided to direct a remake of Harvey. DreamWorks and 20th Century Fox will co-produce the film and production is expected to get underway after the start of 2010. First realized as a stage play by Mary Chase, Harvey was turned into a 1950 film that starred Jimmy Stewart as the hapless man who's best buddy is an invisible man-sized rabbit. Novelist Jonathan Tropper just handed in a script and casting will begin this fall. [Full story]
