Blame the delay for making Hellboy III a reality on Guillermo del Toro. At least, that's what Mr. Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman, said while promoting his new medieval action flick Season of the Witch.
Perlman was only kidding around but he did say that making Hellboy II: The Golden Army was a physically and emotionally exhausting experience for both himself and his director pal. However, that's all "water under the bridge" now and Perlman is eager to get suited back up as Big Red for the third picture. The only question is when Hellboy III will shoot. "It's got to be made," Perlman said. "I really feel like its got to be made. It would be a great disservice to the first two films if you don't see how they wind up."
Perlman also talked about the set-up for Hellboy III. Don't worry, if you've seen The Golden Army there's no spoilers about to come your way.
"The only thing I can share with you is we have this demon who is a victim of this Oracle, which is not negotiable. He's been summoned to the Earth for the destruction of mankind, and that's non-negotiable. This whole notion that his nature, is the demon of destruction — against the way he's been nurtured by his father, John Hurt's character, to be kind and in the service of mankind. Those things are going to be in play in the third one. Then of course you have Liz pregnant with twins at the end of the second film. So you don't know what those two offspring are going to be? Are they going to be more human? Are they going to be more demon? Are they going to be a combination of the two? And how is that going to play out, in terms of Hellboy's destiny. Which I say again is non-negotiable. So that's the backdrop for the third film. And everything will be resolved, all these open-ended questions will finally be resolved. I don't know how, he didn't give me those details. But that's the backdrop for it."

At the 36th annual Saturn Awards Guillermo del Toro commented on the likelihood of seeing Hellboy 3 anytime soon. He wants to be shooting his next movie by May 2011 but it's extremely unlikely that picture will be the third Hellboy. "The Hellboy screenplays are not quick to write. For whatever reason they end up being very complicated to write," the filmmaker explained. "I don't know why. If we went into Hellboy it would need to be the next movie after this one, whatever it is."
Del Toro also said that he is hoping that he can woo Universal into greenlighting a Frankenstein movie that he wants to make, to star Doug Jones in the lead role, but the studio is skittish about committing a large sum to a new monster movie after the disappointing returns from The Wolfman remake that came out earlier this year.

How long must we wait until we can likely expect to see a third Hellboy movie? MTV Splash Page asked Guillermo del Toro that precise question and got a fairly good answer back: about three or four years. Since the director is busy shooting two back-to-back Hobbit movies in New Zealand (expected out in theaters in 2011 and 2012), development on the third screen adventure of big red will have to rest on del Toro's back burner until his trip to Middle-earth is over.
