With his Batman trilogy of films now complete, The Dark Knight Rises director Christopher Nolan is now in talks to serve as both the director and a producer for Interstellar, the hard science fiction film that Steven Spielberg had once been attached to. The screenplay for Interstellar is by the director's brother, Jonathan Nolan, who has also worked on the screenplay for the last two Batman films.
While Nolan negotiates with Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. (where his Syncopy production company is based), it's unknown whether Spielberg will remain involved with Interstellar with Nolan directing or not.

Ben Cosgrove, a senior vice president of production at Paramount Pictures and the studio executive that was in charge of development of the Interstellar movie project, was among 30 other Paramount employees let go from the company this week. Cosgrove was also developing The Fighter for director David O. Russell and a new remake of Dune to be directed by Peter Berg. Since his promotion to the president of Paramount Film Group on June 19, Adam Goodman has been trimming the studio's production and development personnel down and restructuring the two pipelines. Paramount used to be in the business of making 20 or so movies a year, but after parting ways with DreamWorks last year and with its partnership to distribute DreamWorks and Marvel Studios films the studio needs to only make 12 to 14 of its own movies each year. It's currently unknown which development exec at Paramount now will inherit the Interstellar movie.

Steven Spielberg wants to make a science fiction movie based on the scientific theories of physicist Kip Thorne about wormholes, time travel and the possible journeys to other universes. The name of the project is Interstellar and it only exists as a kernel of an idea for a film, with no characters or details about the storyline committed to so far. Spielberg is currently developing the fourth Indiana Jones film and a bio film about Abraham Lincoln for his Schindler's List star Liam Neeson to star in so it's likely that Interstellar won't be ready for him to direct for at least a couple of years.
