The screen rights to Diana Gabaldon's romance/fantasy Outlander series have been acquired by Essential Pictures. Variety reports that the company is now looking for a director and would like to have production rolling on the film sometime next spring. Already Gabaldon's first book, Outlander, has been adapted into screenplay format by Braveheart scribe Randall Wallace. Wallace's past work experience on Mel Gibson's Oscar-winning film makes him ideal for adapting Gabaldon's novel which is set in 18th century Scotland.

So far there have been six novels in the Outlander series. Essential is hoping that their film sparks a franchise.
