In the wake of a movie's release, there are two ways to judge whether it was a success: how much money the film made and how well received it was. In the case of Prometheus, the prequel to Ridley Scott's Alien, the answer to both questions could be summed up in one word: "OK".
Prometheus was not a sure fire hit with critics, Alien fans or at the box office. But with an worldwide gross of $303 million dollars, it's become the highest grossing movie in 20th Century Fox's Alien franchise. It also attained better reviews than Fox's last purebred installment, Alien Resurrection, and both of the two Alien vs. Predator spinoff films. And even if you thought that the screenplay by Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts wasn't as tight as the original Alien, Prometheus did have some great looking visuals and haunted house atmospherics going for it.
Today there is more reason to believe that a sequel to Prometheus will happen. In a mention inside the pages of The Hollywood Reporter, Fox's president of production Emma Watts tells, "Ridley is incredibly excited about the movie, but we have to get it right. We can't rush it," about the supposed Prometheus sequel. A writer hasn't been hired yet but the studio is talking to new writers, not Lindelof or Spaihts, which can either be seen as a distancing away from Prometheus' story clunks or that they're simply too busy. Fox does have contracts with both Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender that would bring them back for Prometheus 2. Less certain is whether director Ridley Scott would come back to direct the second movie or instead shift over to a producing role.
