Rapper Eminem may be ending his nearly decade-long drought from Hollywood by playing the lead in his second film after 8 Mile, Random Acts of Violence. The bestselling music artist would play a newly released ex-con who is stuck between a rock and a hard place: both the gang members that he used to run with and the law officers that caught him want to use him for their own agendas. Not really liking either group since they both had a hand in sending him to jail, Eminem plays both sides and tries to keep his neck above water while figuring out a way to give some payback to both sides.
The project has been in development at 20th Century Fox for years. It was made to cash in on the immense popularity of Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto, and feature a main character that went around stealing hot cars to make money for his debts. When that direction went nowhere, in came Californication director David Von Ancken who ditched the sillier elements of the Random Acts of Violence script and put in a gritty realism feel. The result was a completely different feel for the premise of the movie, which attracted Eminem's producer pals Paul Rosenberg and Stuart Parr to consider it for the rapper.
While Von Ancken is busy working on the new season of Showtime's Californication, Fox will hire a new writer to give Random's script another polish.
