Troy Nixey will direct Simple Machines for Phoenix Pictures. The Don't Be Afraid of the Dark helmer had his pitch for a family-oriented fantasy adventure film bought by Mike Medavoy's production company and will direct the feature after completing work on the Dark horror flick now lensing. Producing are Medavoy, Arnie Messer and Brad Fischer with Nick Nunziata co-producing.

The story follows a reclusive inventor whose creation is taken by a scheming industrialist who plans on using it to achieve world domination. Nixey told Variety that his idea was inspired by the black-and-white comedies of Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd.
