Here's the first look at more than one Smurf and in our world, specifically New York City. The image appears in today's edition of USA Today along with an article detailing the premise of the movie.
As director Raja Gosnell explains to the paper, the villainous Gargamel chases the Smurfs from their village into the woods. Clumsy Smurf discovers a hidden grotto where a magical portal exists that connects their world to ours. The Smurfs enter the portal and wind up in Central Park, with Gargamel following after them. Gargamel's motivation is to capture the Smurfs and use their magical essence to make his own magic more powerful.
Several of the Smurfs, including Papa Smurf and Smurfette, are taken in by a couple (Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays).

His birth certificate may say he's Paul Reubens but to millions of his fans he's better known by his childish alter-ego name Pee-Wee Herman. In any case, Reubens/Pee-Wee will lend his voice to the character of Jokey Smurf in the picture.

The director of Beverly Hills Chihuahua and Scooby Doo has been hired to call the shots on the Smurfs movie. Raja Gosnell will immediately begin work on the production to get it ready for a December 17, 2010 release.
The movie will blend computer generated Smurfs together with live-action actors. No cast members have been announced for the project so far. Not even a Smurf-sized nugget of information has leaked about what the film's story will be about.
Gosnell began his Hollywood career working as an editor on such films as Teen Wolf Too, D.O.A. and Home Alone. He made the leap to directing on 1997's Home Alone 3 and then followed it up with Never Been Kissed, Big Momma's House, the two Scooby-Doo movies and the remake of Yours, Mine and Ours. Sony Pictures is likely hoping that the worldwide fanbase for the Smurfs will translate into box office success like 20th Century Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks picture. [Full story]
