DVD Review: Tron Legacy
Upon second viewing of Tron Legacy, Disney's follow-up to the first CG film made 27 years ago, I find myself forgiving some of the movie's flaws in favor of what it provides upon casual viewing: nice eye candy.

Spec'd: Tron Legacy
Arriving on April 5, 2011 on home video is Tron Legacy. Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is releasing the sequel in an impressive four different formats: on standard DVD format, on Blu-ray, on Blu-ray 3D and on video on demand. As well, the studio is re-releasing the original 1982 Tron movie on DVD and Blu-ray.

If you're a producer or a movie studio/production company executive putting together a big film that will require extensive special effects, you're going to want to watch several demo reels. Put together by special effects houses to showcase their latest work, these demo reels are meant to impress the decision makers. Often they are the deciding factor for why a studio will spend tens of millions of dollars with a certain FX house. In showbiz effects, you're only as good as your last job, and that's why new demo reels are constantly being made by FX companies all the time.

Tron Legacy wins top spot but not the war
In its first weekend of release Tron Legacy made more than the original Tron film made in its entire theatrical run back in 1982. Still, Legacy's opening box office probably won't cause the Disney development team to enjoy any extra special Christmas bonus.

Tron Legacy earns $18m at Friday's box office
Tron Legacy had a commanding Friday night showing, taking in an estimated $18 million dollars from North American theaters on its first day. That number includes about $3.5 mil from midnight early showings of the sequel.

Review: Tron Legacy
27 years have passed since the summer of 1982 and the arrival of Tron. Much has been written about the film's most important historical point, that being the first true use of computer generated (CG) imagery for special effects. Today, CG has become commonplace in movies and even television shows. Tron's digital 1982 world may look as dated as an original Apple II computer does to an iPhone but its core idea -- a world existing inside the computer where beings lived and died fighting in gladiatorial video game arenas -- still has a strong attraction to a lot of us.

Playboy gets into Tron Legacy
Playboy magazine has had a long tradition of hyping a movie's upcoming release by presenting a nude pictoral. Typically, Playboy likes to have one of the actresses from the film pose for a collection of semi-nude or fully nude shots, usually themed to go along with the subject matter of the movie that the actress is appearing in. Sometimes Playboy doesn't have the interest of one of the film's actresses to pose risqué, so instead they will assemble women models from the Playboy repetoire to star in the titillating layout.
But this is just what I've heard. I only read Playboy for the articles.

Tron Legacy music video: "Derezzed"
MTV has premiered the Daft Punk music video for "Derezzed", from the soundtrack to Tron Legacy, and it's quite the technological treat: it looks just like the original 1982 Tron in terms of graphics and visual style. That's how far technology has come: what once took massive banks of Cray supercomputers months to render now can be done by a couple of guys on desktop workstations.

Tron: Uprising coming in 2012
Disney has been amping the hype for its upcoming Tron Legacy movie for almost a year. With print, theatrical, gaming, collectible, clothing, theme park and social media marketing being done, it's clear to see that the company has re-considered the financial viability and consumer interest in this 28-year old franchise. With all of the Tron ancillary goods and marketing being done, for those of you born before the release of the original 1982 film it might be hard to believe that Tron bombed in theaters back then.

Nude Tron at DragonCon
DragonCon 2010 just wrapped on Monday and I wish that I could have been there. I've been twice to this annual celebration of all things geek, genre and it's great. DragonCon has a vibe that's completely different from Comic-Con in San Diego: less commercial and more fan oriented. Wander the halls outside the rooms where panels are being held and you can bump into anybody.
