Preliminary figures are in for this weekend's box office and to no one's surprise Twilight emerged as the new number one film in North America. However, what was a surprise to many was how much this little-movie-that-could grossed: an astonishing $70.5 million dollars. Playing on 3,419 screens that works out to $20,636 per location, making Twilight the fourth largest opening ever for a November release. It beat last weekend's opening gross for the latest James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace ($67.5 million) and the opening weekend for The Incredibles ($70.46 million).

The early box office results for Twilight are looking very good after the teen-oriented vampire romance netted $7 million dollars from midnight screenings. By comparison, Sex in the City's midnight showings took in only $2.5 million back in May.
Early tracking results are currently forecasting an opening day total of $30 million for Summit's movie. That would place Twilight amongst the top 20 highest one-day openings of all-time.
