Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan got their big break when the screenplay for their gore-filled horror movie Feast won the interest of the Project Greenlight producers. Feast went on to earn a decent return on the show's minimal investment and in turn produce two direct-to-video sequels. It also brought the writers to the attention of the Saw movie-makers, and subsequently saw them hired on to write the last four installments of that other gory horror movie franchise.
Melton and Dunstan have continued to remain in the horror genre and find additional work. Their latest payment comes from Legendary Pictures, the financial/production entity that helped put together Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, the upcoming Man of Steel and the recent Sherlock Holmes films that starred Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. Another picture that Legendary is currently producing is Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, and it was on that project that the writers first worked with Legendary, giving that movie's screenplay a polish.
The new gig that Marcus and Dunstan have to do is a rewrite on Waterproof, another high concept idea that involves, you guessed it, monsters.
In Waterproof there's a teenage boy who accidentally releases a wave of monsters upon his small town after unintentionally ordering for them in the pages of a comic book. The idea could be right out of a 1980s Amblin movie, just as Gremlins or Batteries Not Included were.
No director or stars are attached yet to Waterproof. The writers are also working on a new draft of the proposed God of War movie for Universal, based on the Sony PlayStation video game.
