A report on the Coming Soon website earlier this week linked the material girl to play an amazonian princess. An anonymous scooper told the site that WB wants Madonna to play the title role in the movie, with Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) as its director. We caution this is an unconfirmed report, just like the many other reports of casting considerations. Just last month a representative for Silver Pictures told the Comics2Film website that the movie is still in the early scripting stages and casting is the furthest thing from anyone's mind.
This should help the anonymous scooper out who told us they heard actress Brandy Ledford, of Baywatch Hawaii, is up for the Wonder Woman part. We agree 100% with C2F that no real casting calls have been held for the part, just perhaps the odd name batted around in development meetings. There's still a ways to go before auditions start taking place. [Anonymous asked the question.]
One last tidbit to make us the completist on this particular movie: the domains www.wonderwomanmovie.com and www.wonderwomanthemovie.com were registered last August by Warner Bros. While it doesn't mean anything is necessarily happening with the development of the WW movie (similar domains were registered for Batman 5 and Batman Beyond films in development), it shows you WB is covering all the bases. The straightforward www.wonderwoman.com domain takes you to the DC Comics site, while the previous two domains drop you off at the Warner Bros. main doormat page. [Thanks to the efforts of 'LordFanny24', we're all a little bit wiser.]

While it's not breaking news, it is confirmation of a rumor we've reported: last week the trade magazine Variety reported that screenwriter Jon Cohen had been hired to write the script for the Wonder Woman feature.

The Comics2Film web site was all over it first months ago, and they got it right. We just received official confirmation from a representative for Silver Pictures that their production company is developing the Wonder Woman film. Producer Jon Peters, linked to the project at the start of this year, isn't involved with it anymore. Instead producer Joel Silver (The Matrix) is guiding the development of it. Striving to be as precise as we can, we've changed all the credits at the top of the page to reflect the latest.
Earlier this week C2F broke the story that screenwriter Jon Cohen (Minority Report) was busy typing away at a screenplay for Wonder Woman. Our Silver Pictures representative was cagey when we asked him the question, neither wanting to confirm or denying it.
And we're still left scratching our heads about the story that Entertainment Tonight ran last week: apparently either Sandra Bullock or someone else in Hollywood is interested in seeing her play the Amazonian princess. While Sandra may be the type of A-list star that can get the project on the fasttrack, we've got our own choice on who we think should don the WW armor: Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix). Not only has she proven to be a bona-fide action star, just add a wig and she looks like Diana! And -- well, whaddya know about that? -- Moss' last gig working in The Matrix was produced by, you guessed it, current Wonder Woman producer Joel Silver. Maybe after audiences check out Moss' next role as the cool as a cucumber commander of the first mission to Mars in Red Planet next spring, someone in Hollywood might give our suggestion some thought.

We once heard Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson say that you should never believe anything you read on the Internet; of course, that didn't stop him or his assistant from bombarding the Internet with bogus Scream 2 rumors just to pump up interest in their film (yeah, we're still upset for Kev's attitude regarding that little incident. In a completely unrelated matter, has anyone notice we haven't posted any recent Scream 3 rumors? Hmm, wonder why.) But Mr. Williamson did raise an interesting point: what can you believe on sites like CA?? How much can you trust even when we're obligated to not reveal our sources?
Good question. We don't have an answer, but we wanted to get you in the right frame of mind before we dive into our first two Wonder Woman scoops. Ever since we began a page for the WW project last month there's been a lot of interest (and emails) concerning this baby received at CA. It seems fans are hopeful that plans for a big-budget WW film are slowly beginning to coalesce.
In our last report, 'Scooper9', one of our main WW contacts had told us that producer Jon Peters was on-board and screenwriters James R. Harnock and Eve Marie Kazaros had just turned in their treatment for Wonder Woman and then left the project. Since that last post we've received three important scoops. Here's the first from someone we don't know named 'The Spider':
"The Wonder Woman info you just posted is false. Let me correct you. This is all I know of the project, all accurate.
- Film title: Wonder Woman.
Director: TBA (Won't be announced for a few years at least).
Producer: Ivan Reitman (Jon Peters has nothing to do with this project).
Executive Producers: Michael Gross and Joe Medjuck.
Screenwriters: James R. Harnock and Eve Marie Kazaros (They've written a treatment and are currently at work on the full script).
"No other crew has been determined. It's just too early. The same goes for casting. Don't expect any concrete news regarding this film for a few years at least. I hope that helps." [Reported by 'The Spider'.]
OK, so one person says Harnock and Kazaros are doing the script and Peters isn't on-board. Next up, someone 'Anonymous' sent us this follow-up to 'Scooper9's February 9th posting. We're not going to quote the scooper but instead re-word what they had to say to CA:
They've heard Peters is on-board the project but don't know how the deal was done. They know Reitman's been trying to get a WW movie going since the early 90's, and the signing of Peters may have been a "security measure" since WB likes Peter's track record a lot. The scooper also mentioned they've heard Harnock and Kazaros are off the project; they mention an 'Open letter to WW fans' that mentions this, but they don't include the letter's origin or a copy of said letter. From what the scooper tells us of the letter's contents, it sounds like Peters is looking to bring something a little different to the project than what the writers offered, which the scooper points out is a fairly common business occurence in Hollywood. The scooper also claims to have read many scripts and treatments in their day, and they give the Harnock and Kazaros treatment a high recommendation.
The scooper realizes that the fans have little to go on except reports that a wonderful treatment has been written, so they gave us enough information to settle our desire to know more without blowing any of the cool elements of the Harnock/Kazaros treatment. The treatment is titled: Wonder Woman: The Right. It's set in present-day Gateway City (WW's home town, for those of you that aren't hanging out with the cool kids at lunch hour). Diana origins are alluded to, but it's not an origin story like the first Superman film was. As for the plot, all the scooper would say was that Gateway City is being besieged by heavily armed gang warfare, and that's all we'll get out of them.
As you can see, the two scooper's reports clash. Who to believe? They're both coming from different individuals, and we've tried calling Jon Peters office before to get the goods. He's a busy guy to get a hold of, y'know.
Thankfully, we were able to get someone willing to officially comment on the Wonder Woman rumors. Even though the best info seems to come from those in the Hollywood community who wish to use pseudonyms, information that comes from someone willing to sign their name on it will hold up to the scutiny of even the most doubtful reader of Coming Attractions. That's why we're happy to give you this update from one of the Wonder Woman treatment writers, James R. Harnock:
"Jeez, it seems bad news travels faster than good news. As your informant said, Eve and I are no longer involved in the Wonder Woman feature film project, but yes the show will go on :) Reitman has been trying to get a WW project off the ground since the early 90's, so you know he's dedicated to it. The fans really were (and we hope still are) gung-ho about this movie, and even though we're not involved in it, Eve and I hope this thing lives up to everyone's expectations.
"For all the Jon Peters bashers out there, just give him a chance. I mean, he was the man behind the only good Batman movie. Besides, we all know how good Ivan Reitman is, so as far as I'm concerned, with him involved the movie is in good hands.
"We're disappointed, but these things happen. Life goes on.
"Actually, one thing I'd really like to know is who this 'Fabio2' person is... their 'confirmation' that we were writing the screenplay is dated Jan 12th... which is actually BEFORE we started the screenplay. I just found it kinda funny."
[Give a pat on the back to James R. Harnock. We didn't even have to use the golden lasso on him.]
So there you have it. Peters is indeed on-board as producer and Harnock and Kazaros are not working on the project anymore and there's no ill intent. Sounds like a professional break and so we're taking it as such. And no, just before you go asking the question, Harnock isn't 'Scooper9', 'Fabio2' or anyone else. Harnock merely wished to set the matter straight regarding the duo's involvement.
Hopefully more progress will be made on the project, and a screenwriter will soon be selected. The good news is it looks like some significant movement is finally happening on Reitman's project and we're optimistic that it'll keep moving forward.

OK, first we've gotta admit we feebed up. When 'Scooper9' laid their scoop on us last week we erroneously reported that they had read the screenplay by Harnock and Kazaros, when in fact all they had read was the treatment. The screenwriters haven't handed in a completed script just yet.
That said, 'Scooper9' also laid on us this tidbit that left a bad taste in their mouth: they've heard Jon Peters is now on-board the project as its producer, Reitman will apparently be directing, and rumors are floating around that Harnock and Kazaros are no longer involved with the project. "This is really bad news considering how good their treatment was (as I said in an earlier scoop)... and it makes it even worse when you take a look at what Kevin Smith has had to say about Jon Peters' 'work' on Superman Reborn," 'Scooper9' adds.
- Whoops! We apologize for drinking on the job to 'Scooper9'. Comment on this Scoop (0)Thursday, February 4, 1999
Is the script already done? Yup, according to this scooper's claims. "Just got a peek at the Harnock/Kazaros treatment and your previous info is correct -- no campy shit. Good action/adventure flick with an actual story, and a good one at that. Finally a comic movie that actually DOESN'T f*ck up the character."

"Just a couple things about the WW project -- mainly rumor control. First, there have been rumors circulating that this movie will try to appeal to the Xena audience, meaning it will be the same tongue-in-cheek impossibly-cartooish-battles genre as Xena. This is completely FALSE. Harnock and Kazaros have made it clear that they don't want to turn this into the Batman franchise, so this will be a straight action/adventure. Second, to say Zeta-Jones is in the running is kind of true, but kind of not. Just about every actress in Hollywood who is over five foot eight and can handle an action-laden role is under consideration."
- A big thank you to 'Guy On the Inside' for easing our doubts. Comment on this Scoop (0)Tuesday, January 12, 1999
Thanks to one of our readers we're able to provide some more light on this project. "I can confirm that your Wonder Woman info is partly correct. Yes, James R. Harnock and Eve Marie Kazaros are the current screenwriters (after original screenwriter Kimberlee Reed's script was rejected), yes, Ivan Reitman is the producer (not executive producer) and Catherine Zeta Jones is being eyed (though she hasn't even been contacted yet; Reitman is simply preparing a list of potential Wonder Woman's), but the project is still at Warner Bros. not Universal. Universal were the producers of the Lynda Carter TV series, but they lost the rights back in the mid-80's. Deborah Joy LeVine was prepping a new TV series last year, but the project fell through. Reitman has been working on a Wonder Woman feature since around 1994/95."
- Thanks to 'Fabio2' who scouted Paradise Island for us. Comment on this Scoop (0)Tuesday, January 5, 1999
We finally launch CA's Wonder Woman page with a exciting and hot scoop, followed by a call for more information. We were recently scooped by someone the rumor that Universal Pictures is starting up work on a Wonder Woman feature. The scooper said there's no script or plot yet but U. is looking at casting Catherine Zeta-Jones in the lead.
OK, now that the exciting stuff is out of the way, here's the deal: we need more info about this project. We heard back in the early 90s that Ivan Reitman, the director of Stripes, Ghostbusters, Twins and most recently Six Days Seven Nights was somehow involved in a producing capacity with this project. Does anyone know if that's still the case?
Second question: can anyone at Universal or WB confirm or deny their studio's involvement with this project? We assumed that since WB owns DC Comics any Wonder Woman feature would find its home there, but that might not be necessarily the case. Anyone know otherwise??
