In 2012 Sony reboots Spider-Man

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Monday, January 11, 2010

Just yesterday Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire was telling the press how happy he was with the creative direction being taken on Spider-Man 4. Today, he's out of a job.

Sony Pictures has announced that they are rebooting the Spider-Man film franchise by starting fresh creatively. Gone from the mix of development for the next Spider-Man movie (which is virtually certain to not be called Spider-Man 4 anymore) is director Sam Raimi and stars Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. In will be a new creative team, to be determined. Remaining onboard are Spider-Man producers Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad. And scooting through the brooming of the franchise is James Vanderbilt's screenplay which will now be used as the foundation of a reboot of the Spider-Man movie series that, in the words of Sony's press statement, "focuses on a teenager dealing with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises."

Quotes from the chairmen of Sony Pictures, Columbia Pictures and director Sam Raimi are contained in the Sony Pictures press release, listed in its entirety below.

Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012.

Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager dealing with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

The new chapter in the Spider-Man franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

"A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three Spider-Man films  that set a new bar for the genre.  When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We're very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning," said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

"Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me.  While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job," said Sam Raimi.

"We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else's hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable," said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio's chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. "Now everything begins anew, and that's got us all tremendously excited about what comes next.  Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can't wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012."

"Spider-Man will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures.  "We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films. As we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen."

The studio will have more news about Spider-Man in 2012 in the coming weeks as it prepares for production of the film.

How ridiculous. I think I will reboot my last birthday, followed by possibly re-booting my breakfast this morning and then maybe I will re-boot my train journey to work this morning as apparently, nothing is to recent and fresh to be able to escape a reboot.

Another example of the dip-shitted "group-think" that Hollywood execs have.

'Mungo reboot worked for 'A' franchise, so now Mungo re-boot ALL franchises. Mungo a genius!'

....says "Kill Bond, NOW!"

Yeah. Pretty much what Dalton said.

Teenage Spiderman is a "trend" and guess what? Trends disappear faster than they start. The last 2 Spidey cartoon series have taken the character backwards in time and I don't see how the studio will be able to put together a quality film that won't piss off and alienate fans before this particular trend is over. Sad.

Honestly, though, I was never really gung-ho for the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy. I think part of that is that I don't buy how the characters acted a lot of the time. I didn't buy Harry blaming Spidey for the Green Goblin's death and being so vengeful. Yes, I know he's like that in the comics, but the motivation didn't translate on screen.

Spidey 2 was a definitely better, but again, some dialogue just didn't work, like "I am Spider-Man no more." What kid talks like that? In any event, it wasn't the second coming of the Superhero Savior.

And Spidey 3 was largely a mess.

I don't care if it gets rebooted or not, and I don't care about him being back in high school. That's where the character started, so I'm fine with a reboot putting him back there. I hope they get a great script and director, because it'd be nice to actually be excited about a Spider-Man movie again.

this is bullshit I can't believe there rebooting Spider-man. A reboot is something you do 10-15 years from now. Hollywood has no creativity anymore. I am not watching the reboot.
