Adam Sandler drops his quarters for a Pixels movie
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Thursday, May 13, 2010

See what happens when you get a little bit of exposure for your short film?
Pixels, the short film that shows what might happen when classic video game characters invade the real world, is on the path to becoming a feature length movie. Happy Madison Productions, the production company that Adam Sandler owns, has optioned the rights and is developing the movie with Columbia Pictures in mind.
In Patrick Jean's flick gaming heroes and villains like Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Frogger, the Space Invaders and others descend on New York City. Some, like the big monkey, throw barrels down at the streets from atop the Empire State Building. Others, like the yellow pellet eater, roam the subway tunnels. In the end the city gets turned into pixels.
The movie's storyline is supposedly going to be in the vein of Ghostbusters which tells me that the action is going to be NYC-based with comedic overtones. Happy Madison would also have to work out deals with the copyright holders of the video game characters. Since more than a few of these properties are already movies in various stages of development it's hard to say how much of the original short's cast of characters would appear in the Pixels movie.
