Avatar beats Titanic, becomes #1 movie of all-time
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Wednesday, February 3, 2010
James Cameron has beaten James Cameron.
Sometime yesterday Avatar surpassed Titanic and became the highest-grossing movie domestically of all-time. As of Tuesday, February 2, 2010, the domestic take of Avatar stood at $601,141,551. Titanic opened on December 17, 1997 and went on to ultimately gross $600,788,188 from North American theaters.
From international venues Avatar has already surpassed Titanic. Avatar's worldwide cumes now total $1,446,989,293 compared to Titanic's global haul of $1,242,413,080.
How much farther will Avatar continue to go? Back in 1998 Titanic held on to the number one spot in the box office for a phenomenal 16 weeks in a row. So far Avatar has managed to eclipse Titanic's box office -- in only seven weeks of release.
