The Avengers sinks Battleship at the box office
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, May 20, 2012
For the third weekend in a row Marvel's The Avengers is the number one movie at the box office. This weekend the movie grossed an estimated $55 million dollars more, propelling its total domestic gross to an amazing $457 million dollars. Worldwide, The Avengers has made $1.18 billion dollars.
The Avengers also just shot past Shrek 2 as the sixth-highest grossing domestic film of all-time, and will overtake Star Wars: A New Hope tomorrow (with its $460m in total box office.) It's also pretty evident that Avengers will surpass The Phantom Menace ($474m), but will it climb past The Dark Knight and its $533m?
Second place is held by newcomer Battleship and its $25.3m. With a budget of $200+ mil, Battleship's opening is pretty limp and it'll have great difficulty getting to $100 million domestic. So, no more board game-based movies?
In third spot is Paramount's The Dictator with $17.4m.
Dark Shadows drops two spots from #2 to #4 with its second weekend gross of $12.7m (total: $50.9m.)
What to Expect When You're Expecting flops with its tepid $10.5m opening.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel opens in #6 with $3.2m.
The Hunger Games is #7 with $3.0m (total: $391.6m.)
Think Like a Man is #8 ($2.7m new, $85.8m total.)
At #9 is The Lucky One with $1.7m new and $56.9m total.
And tenth position is held by The Pirates! Band of Misfits with $1.4m new, $25.3m total.

I'm thinking after The Avengers had a $200 million opening weekend, all movies scheduled to open in the next month should've immediately rescheduled their release date.
