Batman 4 talk? It's never too early to start
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Wednesday, November 24, 2010

You've heard that there's going to be a new Batman movie, right? Called The Dark Knight Rises, it will mark the third time that Christopher Nolan returns to Gotham City to direct Christian Bale dressed in a bat-suit. Although there's been speculation about which villain will emerge to confront Batman this time around, Nolan hasn't revealed who it will be (except to cross The Riddler off of the potential foes.) There's a rumor that there will be two new female characters introduced in the film and one will be a villainess. Catwoman? Or will she be the daughter of Batman Begins R'as al Ghul?
Jonathan Nolan and his older brother Chris aren't spilling much to members of the press, but Christian Bale is being maneouvered into a corner by members of the press. The actor is making the rounds and doing press for his role in The Fighter, and as is the case when these events happen, reporters use some leverage to ask about high profile projects on their horizon. Bale is set to start filming The Dark Knight Rises in May of next year, so you think he would know who he'll be battling in the new Batman movie. Nuh-uh.
"Chris will let me know what I need to know when I need to know it," Bale was telling E! Online. "I probably know a little bit more than some other people out there, but I think most people would be surprised at how little I do know.
"It just hasn't been necessary yet. I know he'll give me plenty of time to prepare for whatever I need to, and I'll discover it."
One question Bale has answered was whether he believes this will be the last time that he'll don the bat-suit. "I think so. That's up to Chris," he said to MTV. "That was always what the discussion was. But you know, if Chris says, 'I see another story here,' then we'll be up for it. But in my mind, I'm expecting this will be it."
Reading between the lines it sounds like Bale isn't being committal either way on making a fourth Batman film with Nolan. This is standard for just about anyone associated with a popular movie franchise; you don't want to gush about how great it's been playing the role or making the Batman movies because it can be used against you when contract discussions arise. Play things cool, keep your enthusiasm close to your vest and see what other opportunities arise between now and that next Batman movie.
But here's a cool thing that will get your imagination working: Bale also kidded around with MTV that it would be fun to wait 20 years and then play the 50-something Bruce Wayne/Batman in a movie adaptation of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. His specific words, as reported by MTV, were that it "would not be bad."
The positive reaction to his Superman movie will probably be so strong that there will be a public mandate.

Hey Bale, there's a new thing in Hollywood called "old people make-up". You don't have to wait out the 20 years!
