Battle: Los Angeles blows away box office competition
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, March 13, 2011
The aliens won. Battle: Los Angeles is emerging as the victor in the box office results, eclipsing last week's champ Rango.
The Columbia Pictures ET invasion movie has an estimated Friday to Sunday gross of $36 million dollars. That's a nice debut and should give the film the 12th best opening for a March release. It also gives B:LA an excellent chance of climbing over the $100 million dollar domestic box office line by the time its theatrical run comes to an end.
Rango falls to second spot in its second week, earning another $23 million dollars to bring its 10 day total up to $68.6 million.
Red Riding Hood, the second new release out this weekend, doesn't seem to be capturing the Twilight crowd's imagination. The Amanda Seyfried thriller/fantasy could only muster up a $14.1m opening weekend.
In its second weekend out, Universal's The Adjustment Bureau drops to #4 with $11.4m in new ticket sales (for a total of $38.4m).
But wow, Mars Needs Moms doesn't appear to be attracting the moms or the kids. This CG 'toon could only net $6.8m in its public start.
Hall Pass drops to #6 with $5.1m in new cash added to its owners' coffers (total domestic gross: $34.9m).
Beastly drops four positions to #7 ($5m in new cash, $16.9m total).
Just Go With It earns another $4 million to push its total to $93.9m, and thus continuing to make those involved with Adam Sandler's career happy.
Big Oscar winner The King's Speech slips to #9 but adds $3.6m more to its $129 million dollar gross.
And finally in tenth spot we've got Gnomeo and Juliet. It might break the $100 million threshold now; with $3.5m in new box office added this weekend, the 'toon has now brought in $89 million bucks.
